AAUW Offers Students Leadership Opportunities
In fall 1999 AAUW kicked off the Emerging Leaders Internship Program, a new and exciting initiative to give students a variety of experiences with nonprofit work. Each AAUW branch can appoint up to three undergraduate student interns to work on AAUW programs, public policy, or membership/marketing for one year under the guidance of a branch leader. The interns become AAUW student affiliates, with national dues waived.
Response to this program has been enthusiastic. Students appreciate the opportunity to participate in AAUW projects, gain real-world experiences, make community connections, and network with members. Already interns are working on websites, Sister-to-Sister Summits and follow-up activities, Woman-to-Woman community dialogues, the AAUW Voter Education Campaign, and public policy issues, to name a few.
Branches are encouraged to seek out their local institution’s college/university representative to recruit students. If you were not able to participate in this year’s program (the registration deadline was January 15, 2000), plan to get involved for the 2000/2001 academic year.
