8:30 -10:00 p.m. Conference Reception (Cash Bar)Personal Finance: Smart Women Finish Rich! will be presented by Jennifer Wilkin, an AAUW member who works for Edward Jones, the largest financial-services firm in the U.S. in terms of retail offices. She hosts a different investment seminar each month and teaches a 5-week financial workshop twice a year. Her subject matter for the workshop will include investment strategies to encourage women to manage their investments wisely, to plan for financial security, now, and in the years to come.Book Basket: A Room of One’s Own will be an informal discussion about the latest feminist writings. Suggestions for summertime reading will be offered, as well as an opportunity to vote for the top ten books of the decade (maybe even the century).
First Timers: How First Timers Become Habitués will be presented by former Great Lakes Regional Director, Barbara Meier, and current Great Lakes Regional Director, Barbara Bonsignore. There will be a quiz. There will be prizes. It will be fun.

Opening remarks from Regional Director
Keynote: Vicki Getchell, commercial and military pilot; she flew 45 combat messions in Desert Storm; stationed in Saudi Arabia, she witnessed the unequal treatment of women in that country. Her theme for today: The importance of mentoring young people, especially girls, in the areas of math, science and technology in order to prepare them for nontraditional careers in an expanding job market.

11:30 - 12:00 BreakChallenges to Public Education will focus on the voucher threat that has already found a foothold in two of the Great Lakes states, Ohio and Wisconsin, and is on the November ballot in Michigan. Jane Strand, Public Policy Director from Michigan will introduce a 10-minute video entitled Vouchers: The Wrong Choice that illustrates the three key dangers of voucher programs - cost, accountability and lack of student choice.Program in Action will highlight several outstanding branch programs or projects that can be replicated by other branches. In addition, there will be a component of the workshop that deals with the College/University connection between branches and their partners in higher education. Methods for increasing that important link will be introduced and encouraged.
Community Action Grant Recipients will show how three outstanding projects were nurtured by AAUW funding. They are:
- Green Bay Area Branch’s Beyond the Butterfly, a 60 minute video documentary about what middle school girls are thinking, feeling and doing. The presenters will discuss the grant process, how the video was produced and the impact of the video to date.
- Girl Neighborhood Power is an after school group helped by the Madison, WI Branch. Girls ages 9 - 14 sample activities outside of Madison and make connections to other girls’ clubs. Learn more about this powerful program and hear how your branch can make a difference in your community.
- Lillith Computer Clubs demonstrate how a small group of women, with the help of AAUW, expanded an after school program for middle school girls. The world of technology has been opened up to four Madison middle schools as a result of this innovative program. Tech-Savvy in application.
Woman-to-Woman: Social Justice Star project will consist of a panel of women from diverse community groups engaging in dialogue on issues such as: women’s health, domestic violence, Social Security, Medicare and quality of life. The moderator will facilitate the discussion and work toward action outcomes at the close of the session.

AAUW Progress in Equity Awards will feature exciting award winning programs that could be replicated on a campus near your branch. The Michigan Grand Valley State University Women’s Climate Study, winner of the 1999 LAF PIE Award elevated the challenges female faculty, students and staff face on campus. As a result of the report’s findings, the administration immediately implemented changes that include the construction of an on-campus child care facility, the strengthening of the university’s sexual harassment policies, and the formation of a presidential task force to address lesbian and gay issues. The Climate Study will be repeated every five years and gives visibility and legitimacy to the concerns of women on campus.4:00 - 4:30 p.m. Open Caucuses or Networking
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Women Faculty Mentoring Program was a 1995 PIE honorable mention. This program matches senior and junior women faculty members and gives training sessions on the tenure process and mentoring. The goals of the mentoring program are to help ensure that junior colleagues:
- are aware of the invisible college
- learn the unwritten system of shared norms
- formulate personal goals within the system to maximize their chances of promotion.
AAUW of WI Leader on Loan Project: The Wisconsin Leader on Loan Pilot Project is called MembershiProgramming: Making the Connection and will feature highlights of the April workshop with past Association Program V.P., and past Association Membership V.P., Carolyn Garfein. Learn how you can use the new program initiative and membership tool kit to attract new members and revitalize your branch.
AAUW Website Access: It’s Easy When You Know How is designed for those who want to know more about the AAUW website. The presenter will be Marsha Miller, Indiana AAUW webmaster. She will show participants how to find the items they want to access on the website, from the Public Policy 2-Miniute Activist, to the online forms for Branch Officer Forms, to Member Bulletin Boards and Chat Rooms.
EF: Soaring to New Heights will be presented by Mary Ellen Smyth, EF Development V.P., and Charlotte Crawford, President, Gender Equity Fund, AAUW Illinois, Inc. Mary Ellen will talk about the implications of the most recent research (Transitions and Tech-Savvy), as well as exploring the possibilities involved in the fundraising goals of the Foundation. Charlotte will explain how the Gender Equity Fund was established in Illinois, demonstrate its success, and answer questions about the pros and cons of creating a tax-exempt Fund, in case other states are interested in pursuing a similar path.

Fellow Kimberly Miller
Following the dinner banquet, Kimberly Ann Miller, a 1999-2000 recipient
of the AAUW Women’s Dissertations Fellowship award supporting her topic
Women, Violence, and Visual Representation in the Recent History of
South Africa. will be the guest speaker.
Kim is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
specializing in African and African-American art and women’s studies. She
has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the art history,
African American studies, and women’s studies departments. She was a
Teaching Fellow for the college of Letters and Science in 1997-98. In
1998-99 she taught art history at the University of Cape Town and
University of Witswatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Leadership Plenary will feature Patrice Buzzanell, Ph.D., Purdue University, in collaboration with Alice Smith and Alice Huebner from AAUW-Illinois, Inc., members of the Great Lakes Regional Planning Committee. The 90-minute session is designed to enhance the leadership skills of every AAUW member in attendance. Dr. Buzzanell is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at Purdue, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in areas such as leadership, careers, research methods, gender and organizational communication. She has taught at Northern Illinois University, Michigan State University, the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management, University of Michigan-Flint, and the Krannert Executive Education Programs at Purdue University. Dr. Buzzanell is concerned with communication that disenfranchises others, that fails to promote values that matter, and harms peoples’ abilities to develop their own and others’ potential. Patrice has worked with AAUW-Illinois, Inc. before, first as a keynote speaker, then as a presenter of preliminary data gathered on leadership images and needs.10:00 - 10:30 a.m. IFUW 27th Triennial Conference Presentation
Sarah Harder, former American Association of University Women President (1985-1989), will bring a global perspective to the Regional Conference. She has worked for twenty-five years on issues involving women at grassroots, national and international levels. In Washington, DC, she is the newly elected president of the National Peace Foundation. She also co-chairs the National Women’s Conference Committee and serves on the National Council of Women’s Organizations. From 1985-89, as President of AAUW, she also chaired the Educational Foundation. She is vice-president of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) based in Geneva. At the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Harder established academic support services for minority, disadvantaged and reentry students. A tenured member of the English Department, she heads the Women’s Studies program and local projects for girls and low-income women. She will be inviting all members to attend the 27th Triennial Conference in Ottawa, Canada, August 10-17, 2001.
