The art education program at Indiana State University prepares students for certification to teach art in grades kindergarten-12. Course work in the program includes three components.  The productive component, or studio area, teaches students basic concepts and skills and technical proficiencies. The appreciative component- including aesthetics, art history, and art criticism- gives students philosophical, historical, and critical bases for viewing art of the past and present.

The professional component gives students knowledge and abilities related to education in general and art education in particular. This is done through classroom laboratory and clinical experience in creative abilities in the classroom. It also cultivates confidence in students as educators who can effectively teach a comprehensive art curriculum.
