SYCAMORES HANDLED EASILY BY No. 23 SHOCKERS

Box Score

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State mistakes gave assistance to a Wichita State lineup that needed no help as the Shockers earned a 14-1 victory in seven innings on Saturday afternoon. The two teams went scoreless through four innings, before WSU broke through with three runs in the fifth and sixth and finished off the game with an eight-run seventh for the mercy-rule win.

ISU starter Ryan Hayes (3-3) went 6.1 innings and gave up 10 hits and eight runs, but only four were earned. However, three of the Sycamores six errors were charged to the left-handed starter. Four Sycamore pitchers were needed in the seventh to retire the Shockers.

Aaron Shafer (8-1) was impressive on the mound for Wichita State going all 7.0 innings giving up only four hits, with the Sycamores lone run coming on a solo home run by Nevin Ashley in the bottom of the seventh. It was the team-leading eighth home run for Ashley. Six Shockers posted two hits as WSU totaled 14 safeties in a well-balanced attack.

The Sycamores (19-23, 5-9 MVC) and Shockers (33-15, 11-6) will complete the three-game series on Sunday at 1 pm.
