INDIANA STATE DOWNED AT LOUISVILLE, 7-3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Indiana State Sycamores, who took three of four on their most recent home stand, fell 7-3 against the University of Louisville in a road contest on Friday afternoon (March 9). ISU fell to 5-3 on the season while the Cardinals improved to 8-5. ISU is competing in the University of Louisville Cardinal Baseball Classic.

Taking the loss for the Sycamores was senior left-hander Ryan Hayes, who fell to 1-1 on the season. Hayes tossed seven innings, striking out three, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs. The Cardinal’s Zach Pitts improved to 3-1 for Louisville with an eight-inning, five-hit effort. Pitts struck out five Sycamores on the day.

Senior first baseman Marcus Artner led the way for Indiana State with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with a RBI. Josh Abercrombie and Chris Schmidt also each picked up a hit, with one RBI a piece.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, before Sean Osborne and Strausborger occupied first base with no outs in the top of the third. After a Ryan Bond groundout, the runners moved to second and third with just one out. Abercrombie groundout out to first to plate ISU’s first run and cut the lead down to 3-1.

Chris Schmidt followed that up with a two-out double with plated Strausborger to make it 3-2 and get ISU back in the game.

 

The Sycamores would surrender three more runs in the bottom of the third frame to make the score, 6-2.

 

After falling behind 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth, ISU made it 7-3 in the top of the sixth with off a bases loaded single by Artner which scored Abercrombie.

 

ISU’s Matt Shelton pitched the eighth for the Sycamores, allowing just one hit.
