FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANA STATE EXPLODES FOR 20-2 VICTORY OVER MURRAY STATE
MURRAY, Ky.
– After using strong pitching and defense to win game one
of today’s (March 17) doubleheader against Murray State, the
Sycamores got offensive with a 20-2 victory in game two over the
‘Breds. ISU swept the double-dip with a 20-2 victory to move to
7-7 on the season while Murray State falls to 3-13.
ISU plated a
season-best 12 runs in the top of the third to burst out to the
14-1 lead. The Sycamores’ 20 runs surpassed their previous best
offensive production to date, which was 18 runs scored in the
season opener at Georgia State.
In the third the
Sycamores sent 16 batters to the plate, as four different
players scored twice in the frame. Brett Siegmund recorded two
doubles in the inning with four RBI while Chris Schmidt posted
two singles and a run batted in as the Sycamores had to battle
three different ‘Bred pitchers in the frame. ISU put five
different batters on base with four walks and a hit-by-pitch.
Senior left-hander
Ryan Hayes picked up his second victory of the season in just
two innings of work in the scheduled shortened contest. He
allowed just three hits and a run (all in the first inning) to
earn the win. Josh Varno came in to pitch the next three
innings, allowing just one hit, and striking out four. Nathan
Inman came on in the bottom of the sixth to close out the
Sycamore victory.
For the game, Schmidt
was 3-of-4 at the plate with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Siegmund enjoyed a 4-for-4 day with five runs batted in
(including a three-run double in the third) and a trio of runs
scored.
Nick Coilli was 2-of-2
in the game with three runs scored while Ryan Bond and Sean
Osborne each drove in two runs.
The ‘Breds scored its
lone run in the bottom of the first inning for a quick 1-0
advantage, before ISU regained the lead in the second with a
pair of runs for the 2-1 lead. The Sycamores then broke the game
wide-open with their 12-run third inning for the 14-1 lead.
Blake Harbert walked
with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning to drive
home Josh Feltner for a 15-1 lead. Siegmund’s two-out, bases
loaded free pass drove in Strausborger for the 16-1 advantage.
Paul Strack then blasted a ball back up in the middle to plate
two more runs for an 18-1 lead. The lead grew to 19-1 on an RBI,
hit-by-pitch from Bond. Feltner drew yet another walk to make it
20-1. The Sycamores were able to score six runs in the top of
the sixth.
Indiana State and
Murray State return to Johnny Reagan Field for the third game of
the series on Sunday, March 18. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
