EVANSVILLE TAKES ADVANTAGE OF DEFENSIVE MISCUES TO DOWN ISU, 9-4

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State committed four errors and allowed six unearned runs as the Sycamores fell to Evansville 9-4 in the second game of this weekend’s Missouri Valley Conference series at Sycamore Field. ISU falls to 14-14, 0-5 MVC while the Purple Aces improved to 22-11, 5-3 MVC.

Junior Ryan Tatusko rebounded from his last two outings to pitch well against Evansville. He went 5.2 innings, allowing four hits and four runs, two of which were unearned. He struck out a pair of Purple Aces as his record dropped to 3-4 on the season. Tatusko left the game in the top of sixth when a hot shot back to mound hit him in the hand.

Chad Dawson tossed the next two thirds of an inning, giving up one hit and a pair of runs, one of which was unearned. Josh Varno pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and three unearned runs and striking out a pair.

Evansville grabbed a quick 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning, before the Sycamores tied the game in the bottom of the third. Ryan Bond led off the frame with his third double of the season and moved over to third on sacrifice bunt by Andrew Strange. Bond knotted the score when he crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Chris Schmidt.

ISU picked up the game’s next two runs in the bottom of the fifth, which began with an infield hit by Strausborger to lead off the frame. Bond advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a groundout moved Strausborger to third, Schmidt picked up the walk to put runners at the corners with two outs. Brumagin teamed with Siegmund on back-to-back RBI singles to give the Sycamores a 3-1 lead.

The Purple Aces took advantage of the Sycamores’ errors over the next two innings, and scored seven times, five of which were unearned. UE led 8-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Sycamores made it 8-4 in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Siegmund which plated Schmidt. Evansville added a score in the top of the eighth for the 9-4 win.

Evansville’s Kai Tuomi pitched six innings of eight-hit baseball to improve to 7-0 on the season.

Siegmund finished the game 2-of-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Strausborger continued his recent string of strong performances at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Schmidt did not record a hit in the game, but did score twice.

The Sycamores and Purple Aces continue their three-game MVC series on Easter Sunday at Sycamore Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. (ET).
