CREIGHTON DOWNS SYCAMORES, 15-5 IN MVC SERIES OPENER
TERRE
HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State Sycamores were
within one run of the league’s second place Creighton Bluejays
through the fifth inning, but gave up eight runs over the next
two frames as Creighton opened up the game and eventually won
15-5, in the MVC series opener at Sycamore Field. ISU falls to
18-17, 2-8 MVC while the ‘Jays improved to 25-11, 10-3.
Sophomore Matt Shelton
earned his first career MVC start and pitched 5.0 innings,
allowing six hit and six runs, four of which were earned. He
walked four and struck out a pair. After Chad Dawson walked
three batters in 0.1 innings of work, Brian Gass came on to work
the final 3.2 innings of work and allowing five hits and six
runs with a trio of walks and strikeouts. Shelton dropped to 3-1
on the season with the loss.
Centerfielder Dave
Brumagin went 3-of-5 at the plate with one run scored. Chris
Schmidt was 2-of-5 with a pair of runs scored. Nick Ciolli drove
in a pair of runs in the game, going 3-of-5 at the plate.
The game was plagued
by errors by both teams as the Sycamores committed a trio of
miscues while Creighton was guilty of a season-high four. In all
only three of the Sycamores’ five runs were earned while 13 of
the ‘Jays were 15 were earned.
Creighton starter Marc
Lewis improved to 6-1 on the season by going six innings,
allowing 10 hits, three runs (one earned) and striking out
three. The Bluejays’ Reese earned a three-inning save (his first
of the season) by tossing the final 3.0 innings, allowing four
hits and a pair of earned runs. He struck out one Sycamore.
Indiana State and
Creighton return to action, tomorrow (April 21) with the second
game of the series at Sycamore Field. First pitch is set for
1:00 p.m. (ET).
