SYCAMORES GET BATS GOING IN 13-2 VICTORY OVER MIAMI (OHIO)
TERRE
HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State Sycamores
collected 17 hits, including a home run by junior Brett Siegmund
to down Miami (Ohio) by a score of 13-2 on Tuesday evening
(April 24) at Sycamore Field. ISU improves to 19-19 on the
season while the RedHawks fall to 19-16.
Siegmund’s second round tripper of the year proved huge as it
erased an early 1-0 deficit as his blast over the left field
fence gave the Sycamores a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second
inning. ISU eventually built the lead to 4-1 in the frame on a
two RBI single by Josh Abercrombie, which plated Ryan Bond as
well as Sean Osborne.
The lead grew to 6-2 in the third on an RBI single by Siegmund,
who finished the game with a career-best five RBI, as well as a
two-out base hit from Ryan Strausborger.
ISU kept the rally going in the fourth with four more runs as
Nick Ciolli drove in a pair with a double to right field and
Dave Brumagin recorded an RBI single. Siegmund drove in Brumagin
with a sacrifice fly for the 10-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Siegmund singled home Ciolli for his
fifth RBI before Brumagin scored on a bases loaded single to
right field by Strausborger. Chris Schmidt scored earlier in the
inning on a bobble by the RedHawk right fielder allowing ISU to
take a 13-2 lead.
Chad Dawson started for the Sycamores, but lasted just 2.0
innings, allowing four hits and both Miami runs. He walked three
and struck out a pair. Matt Shelton took the victory for the
Sycamores to improve to 4-1 on the season by tossing 3.0 innings
of shut-out, no-hit ball.
For the season series, Shelton pitched 8.2 innings against Miami
(Ohio) and allowed just a pair of runs and only a hit. ISU
downed the RedHawks on the road 4-2 in 14 innings back on March
20.
Josh Varno worked 3.0 innings in the game, allowing no hits and
striking out two.
Siegmund finished off his five RBI night at the plate by tossing
the top of the ninth on the mound. He allowed just one hit and
walked another in his inning of work. Siegmund finished the
night 4-for-4 with five RBI, a run scored, a walk and his second
home run of the year.
Brumagin’s 3-for-4 night extended his hitting streak to 12 games
while Ciolli’s 3-for-4 night extending his current streak to 10
games and put him over the .300 mark (.303) for the first time
this season.
Chris Schmidt as well as Strausborger also added multi-hit games
to the winning effort.
Indiana State returns to action on Friday, April 27 when they
travel to Northern Iowa for a three-game MVC series versus the
Panthers. First pitch on Friday is set for 7:30 p.m. (ET) from
Waterloo’s Riverfront Stadium.
