FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BRADLEY RALLIES LATE TO DOWN SYCAMORES, 5-3
TERRE HAUTE,
Ind.
– The Indiana State baseball team scored a trio of runs in
the bottom of the fourth inning to claim a 3-2 lead, but Bradley
answered with three of their own in the seventh to squeeze out a
close, 5-3 victory over the Sycamores in the MVC series opener
tonight (May 4) at Sycamore Field. ISU falls to 21-21, 4-12 MVC
while Bradley improves to 25-16, 8-8 MVC.
Bradley jumped out to
a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Justin Carr led off the
frame with a double, moved over to third on a single and then
scored on a squeeze play bunt by Mike McMillan.
The Braves added
another in the third when Dan Brewer led off with a double and
scored on a Carr single for the 2-0 advantage.
ISU came roaring back
in the fourth when Chris Schmidt posted the first of his two
hits in the game with a single. Nick Ciolli reached on a
fielder’s choice, but Schmidt was also safe on a throwing error
by McMillan. Schmidt moved over to third as the wild throw
bounded into center field.
With runners at the
corners and no one out, Dave Brumagin singled to center field
allowing Schmidt to score to make the score 2-1. The ball got
away from center fielder Brad Jones, which also allowed Ciolli
to come around and knot the score.
After Brumagin moved
over to third, Marcus Artner’s sacrifice fly drove him in to
give the Sycamores a 3-2 lead.
Junior right-hander
Ryan Tatusko pitched 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits and five
runs, all of them earned. He walked a pair and struck out three.
He cruised through most of the first six innings, but ran into
trouble in the seventh. Bradley scored three times in the frame
for the 5-3 lead and the eventual win. Tatusko was saddled with
the loss to fall to 3-8 on the season.
Bradley starter
Michael Christl went eight innings, giving up four hits and
three runs (only one of which was earned). He walked three and
struck out three others as he improved to 4-5 on the season.
Schmidt finished the
game 2-for-4 with a run scored while Josh Abercrombie and
Brumagin collected ISU’s other two hits in the game.
Nick Ciolli went
0-of-2 in the game to end his hitting streak at 13 games. He
came to the plate in the ninth with the chance to extend the
streak, but used that final at-bat by taking a much-needed
leadoff walk. He was later erased on a double-play, one of four
that the Braves turned in the game.
Indiana State and
Bradley return to action tomorrow, May 5, at Sycamore Field in
the second game of this weekend’s series. First pitch is set for
1:00 p.m. (ET).
