FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANA STATE FALLS LATE TO BRADLEY
TERRE HAUTE,
Ind.
– For the second consecutive day the Indiana State
Sycamores held a late lead against Bradley, but for the second
time this weekend Bradley used a rally to down ISU. The Braves
overcame a 1-0 Sycamore advantage in the eighth inning to plate
three runs in each of the eighth and ninth in taking a 6-1
decision. ISU falls to 21-22, 4-13 MVC while the Braves improved
to 26-16, 9-8 MVC.
Indiana State scored
its run in the bottom of the third inning when Ryan Stausborger
reached with a leadoff walk. After John Feltner moved
Strausborger over to third on a sacrifice bunt, Ryan Bond
reached on an error to put runners at the corners with no one
out. Josh Abercrombie came up with a big hit up the middle to
plate Strausborger for a 1-0 lead.
The Sycamores would
hold the lead for most of the game as sophomore Matt Shelton
proved to be impressive on the mound. In the no decision,
Shelton tossed 6.2 innings, allowing five hits and no runs. Josh
Varno came on in the top of the seventh to get him out of a
mini-jam and preserve the 1-0 lead.
The eighth inning was
a different story for the Sycamores with senior Adam Lindsay on
the hill in relief. Lindsay tossed just one inning, giving up
three hits and three runs, two of which were earned. He took the
loss for Indiana State to drop to 2-5 on the season.
On the day, of
Bradley’s six runs, only two were earned.
Bradley tied the game
in quick order in the eighth with a home run by their first
batter, Dan Brewer, which made the score 1-1. After getting Rice
to ground out, Curry singled through the left side. Carr hit a
deep ball to right field, which just missed being a home run by
an eye lash as the ball grazed off the top of the wall and came
back into the park for a triple. With Bradley now leading 2-1,
Carr later scored on a passed ball to make it 3-1.
The Braves added three
unearned runs in the top of the ninth for the 6-1 victory.
Bradley starter Jon
Goebel earned a no decision as well despite going 6.1 innings,
allowing four hits and the lone Sycamore run of the game in the
third. Tyler Thornton came on to get the final two outs in the
bottom of the seventh as he improved to 5-0 on the season with
the victory.
Bradley’s Brad Altbach
allowed just one hit over the final two innings as he recorded
his fourth save of the season.
Abercrombie went
3-for-5 for the Sycamores, driving in ISU’s lone run. Schmidt,
Ciolli and Strausborger all also picked up hits during the day.
Indiana State and
Bradley return to action for the final game of the series on
Sunday at Sycamore Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. (ET).
