FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANA STATE EXPLODES FOR FIVE RUNS IN THE NINTH TO DOWN
MISSOURI STATE, 10-5
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.
– Indiana State secured its second MVC series
victory of the season with a 10-5 win at Missouri State today
(May 13) inside Hammons Field. The Sycamores fell behind early,
but fought back to earn wins in 2-of-3 games versus the Bears
this weekend. ISU improved to 25-24, 6-15 while MSU fell to
21-30, 6-15 MVC.
The Bears scored a run in each of the first
and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead on Sycamore starter
Matt Shelton.
Indiana State inched closer in the top of the
third frame when Brett Siegmund led off with a double to deep left
centerfield. Despite not advancing during the next two batters,
Siegmund reached third with a pair of outs on a wild pitch by Bear
start Tim Clubb, and then came home on Ryan Strausborger’s RBI
single to right field to make the score 2-1.
In the fourth inning, the Bears added to
their lead making it 3-1 when Matt Lawson doubled to left field
and then scored after stealing third and advancing home on a
throwing error by ISU catcher Sean Osborne.
The Sycamores rebounded in the top of the
fifth to take their first lead of the game. The frame began with a
leadoff walk by Ryan Bond and Siegmund was hit by a pitch to put
runners at first and second with no outs. Casey Martin moved the
runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Sean Osborne got Bond home to
make it 3-2 with a ground out to short and Ryan Strausborger
continued his clutch hitting with a single through the left side
which scored Siegmund to knot the score at three.
Strausborger stole second and scored to give
the Sycamores a 4-3 advantage on a clutch two out RBI single by
Chris Schmidt to right field. With the lead, Shelton settled in
during the bottom of the fifth by retiring the Bears in order for
the second time and recording a pair of strikeouts to send ISU
back to the plate with the same 4-3 lead.
Indiana State was able to keep the pressure
on the Bears in the sixth when Brumagin led off with a double to
left center. He moved over to third on a ground out by Josh
Abercrombie and scored to give ISU a 5-3 lead on a RBI single past
the drawn in Bears’ infield from Bond which plated Brumagin. After
Brett Siegmund was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and
second and just one out, but MSU reliever Pat Doyle forced Martin
to pop out to second base and Osborne was hit by a pitch. Doyle
forced Strausborger to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the
threat, but with ISU clinging to a 5-3 advantage.
Shelton tossed five innings, allowing four
hits and three runs (two of which were earned). He struck out
three Bears in the game as he took his second no-decision of the
week, after also earning one in his mid-week start at Purdue.
Freshman Skyler Pearson came in the sixth and
did not allow a run in relief.
With Adam Lindsay on the hill for the
Sycamores in the last of the seventh, the Bears plated one run to
inch closer to ISU, 5-4. MSU’s Brayden Drake knotted the score at
five with his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the
eighth off Lindsay.
In the ninth, with the score now tied, pinch
hitter Marcus Artner led off the frame with a single back up the
middle and was replaced by Andrew Strange as a pinch runner at
first. Strausborger continued his stellar day with a perfect
sacrifice bunt up the first base line which moved Strange over the
second with just one out. Bear reliever Pat Doyle then struck out
Schmidt for the second out which sent Ciolli to the plate in a big
spot for Indiana State.
The Bears elected to intentionally walk
Ciolli, which sent Brumagin to the plate. Brumagin answered the
call by placing the game winning RBI hit back up the middle on a
0-2 count to score Strange for the 6-5 advantage. The Sycamore
lead grew to 7-5 when Ciolli scored on a wild pitch with the bases
loaded. After a walk to Bond re-loaded the bases, Siegmund took a
pitch off the elbow from Bear hurler Buddy Baumann which drove in
Brumagin for the 8-5 lead. Martin broke the game open with a
single through the right side which scored a pair a runs to make
the score 10-5.
Lindsay finished off the Bears in order in
ninth to improve to 3-5 on the season.
Brumagin enjoyed a stellar day at the plate,
going 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored as well as the
game-winning RBI. Strausborger was 2-for-4 with a run scored and
two RBI. Schmidt also finished with a multi-hit day (2-for-4).
For the Bears, Clubb went 5.1 innings,
allowing eight hits and five runs. He struck out one Sycamore in
the game and his record fell to 5-3.
The Sycamores return to action on Tuesday,
May 15 with its final road game of the season at
Wisconsin-Milwaukee. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. (ET) at Hank
Aaron Field.
