SYCAMORES SET SCHOOL RECORD FOR SACRIFICES IN A SEASON BUT FALL TO SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State and Southern Illinois were tied 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning, but the Salukis plated a total of nine runs in the last two frames to walk away with a 12-3 victory at Sycamore Field and even the series against the Sycamores. ISU falls to 26-25, 7-16 MVC while SIU improves to 33-20, 12-11.

Things started off great for Indiana State, who scored three runs in the first two innings against SIU’s Cody Adams. ISU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by freshman Nick Ciolli. The blast was Ciolli’s sixth of the season.

The Sycamores made it 3-0 in the second when Chris Schmidt put an RBI single through the left side which scored Ryan Strausborger.

SIU evened the game up in the sixth when Adam Hills was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 3-3.

Skyler Pearson took the loss for Indiana State when he surrendered six runs in the eighth innings to fall to 5-1 on the season. SIU’s Cody Adams went the distance, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out six to win his 11th game of the season.

With Sean Osborne’s team-leading 10th sacrifice bunt of the season in the second inning, the 2007 Sycamores set a new school record for sacrifices in a season with 46.

The team will honor its seven seniors in pre-game ceremonies tomorrow, May 19 before the season finale against the Salukis. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. (ET).
