ISU MEN EARN THIRD-PLACE
FINISH AT ISU INVITE;
WOMEN FINISH TIED FOR SIXTH
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – TERRE
HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State cross country team raised
the curtain on the 2004 season Saturday (Sept. 11), as the Sycamores
hosted the ISU Invitational. Senior Aaron Harding helped pace
the men’s squad, earning a third-place finish in the men’s
8k race. Harding finished the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross
Country Course in a time of 25:38.76.
Freshman Blaine Zimmerman finished 18th
with a time of 26:28.13, while junior Jordan Fife followed in
19th place with a mark of 26:30.45. Junior Jon Nay finished 21st
with a time of 26:38.80. ISU’s top seven runners finished
within the top 25, as the freshman trio of David Santelik, Chris
Serling, and Antonio McDaniel finished 23rd, 24th, and 25th, respectively.
“In speaking with the team before
the race I told them to run together and respond to each other,”
said head coach John McNichols. “I was pleased with the
way we ran together as a team and how it translated into our overall
performance.”
Eastern Michigan took first place with a total
of 23 points, while Navy came in second with 40. Purdue finished
fourth with 126 points, while DePaul (164), Butler (172), Southeast
Missouri (176), and Saint Louis (213) rounded out the field. EMU’s
Corey Nowitzke finished first with a time of 24:58.57.
Indiana State’s women’s team tied
for sixth place with a team score of 174. Sophomore Laura Engle
paced the Sycamores with a 21st place finish. Engle finished the
5k run with a time of 18:38.35. Dani Prince finished with a mark
of 19:18.08 to finish 32nd.
Junior Sarah Jarvis crossed the finish line
with a time of 19:32.14, while freshman Heather Stembridge followed
with a time of 19:34.93.
The University of Michigan claimed the team
championship with a score of 34, as the Wolverines’ top
five runners finished in the top 18. Arkansas recorded a team
score of 50 to take second place while West Virginia finished
in third (70).
Purdue finished fourth with 104 points, while
DePaul earned a fifth-place finish with 149 points. Southeast
Missouri finished with 174 points to tie the Sycamores for sixth
place. Butler (200) and Saint Louis (282) rounded out the field.
West Virginia’s Megan Metcalf finished the race first with
a time of 17:07.34.
The Sycamores return to action on Friday (Sept. 17)
when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to take part in the Indiana
Intercollegiate Meet.
