MEN EARN SECOND-PLACE
FINISH AT INDIANA INTERCOLLEGIATES;
WOMEN FINISH FOURTH
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –
The Indiana State men’s cross country team turned in a strong
showing at the 2004 Indiana Intercollegiates on Friday in West
Lafayette, Ind. Each of ISU’s top five runners finished
within the top 25 to lift the Sycamores to a second-place finish
amongst the 26 teams. Senior Aaron Harding led the charge, taking
second place on the 8k course with a time of 25:48.
Harding finished just nine seconds behind Indiana
University’s Sean Jefferson, who took the top honors with
a time of 25:39. Sophomore Sean Bowman turned in a time of 26:17
which was good enough for eighth place. Teammate Jordan Fife finished
twelfth with a time of 26:35. Freshman Blain Zimmerman built off
last week’s strong showing at the ISU Invitational by clocking
a time of 26:40 which put him in fourteenth position. Junior John
Nay came across the finish line in 26:56, which was good for 23rd
place.
Indiana University took the team honors with
a total score of 20, followed by ISU with 59. DePaul (126), Purdue
(133), and Anderson University (148) rounded out the top five.
The Indiana State women’s team earned
a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Laura Engle paced the Sycamores
for the second consecutive week, earning an eighth place finish
with a time of 18:27, a personal best at the 5k distance. The
Sycamores earned 113 team points in the meet.
“We improved from where we were a week
ago,” said head women’s coach John Gartland. “We
still have a ways to go to be one of the better teams in the MVC,
but this performance has us moving in the right direction.”
Freshman Heather Stembridge completed the course
in 19:13 to finish 21st out of 214 competitors. Sarah Jarvis finished
in 28th place with a time of 19:25, while sophomore Dani Prince
finished in 19:45 for a 44th place finish. Carol Linneweber came
across the tape in 48th place with a time of 19:46.
Indiana’s Jessica Gall earned the individual
championship with a time of 17:40. Purdue took the top spot among
the Division I teams with a total of 50 points. IU finished with
57 points to take second place while Ball State came in third
with 66. Valparaiso’s 195 points earned the Crusaders a
fifth-place finish. DePauw (214), IPFW (223), Southern Indiana
(229), Indiana Wesleyan (264), and Anderson University (315) rounded
out the top ten.
The Sycamores will enjoy a weekend off before
returning to action on Saturday, October 2, when they travel to
take part in the Loyola Lakefront Invite in Chicago.
