SYCAMORES MEN WIN INTERCOLLEGIATES; WOMEN TAKE FOURTH

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana State men’s cross country team captured the 2005 Indiana Intercollegiates on Friday (Sept. 16). It is the Sycamores’ first win at the Intercollegiates since posting back-to-back victories in 1997 and 1998. The ISU women’s team earned a fourth-place finish.
The men’s team took the overall competition with a team score of 41. Four Sycamores finished in the top six. Sean Bowman led the charge for ISU, finishing the meet in first place with a time of 25:12. Blaine Zimmerman came in fourth, crossing the finish line in 25:27. Justin Kunz (25:32) took fifth place, while Antonio McDaniel (25:39) was sixth. Chris Sering finished the 8k course in 26:15 to earn 25th place, one spot ahead of teammate John Nay who was 26th with a time of 26:16.
“The strategy was for our lead runners to go out and control the race in a pack and move up as the race progressed,” said head coach John McNichols. “Our first four runners did that to perfection today. Bowman was able to pull away as the individual winners, while Zimmerman, McDaniel, and Kunz fed off each other and took top spots. It was a great day for us.”
Indiana came in second with a team score of 63. Purdue finished third with 116 points, edging Anderson University (120) which took fourth place. DePauw recorded 140 points to finish in fifth place.
Kyle Walsh completed the course in 26:26 to finish in 30th place, while Erik Forehand’s time of 26:42 was good for 41st place. Sophomore David Santelik closed out ISU’s lineup in 61st place with a time of 27:15.
The ISU women earned 135 points and took fourth place. Indiana won the women’s 5k with a team total of 63. Purdue came in second with 98 points, while Ball State took fourth with 118. Ball State closed out the top five with 138 points.
Laura Engle took fourth place with a time of 18:11. Dani Prince completed the event in 18:51 to finish 16th. Sophomore Heather Stembridge finished 22nd with a time of 19:13. Four Sycamores ran within five second of each other, led by Sarah Jarvis who finished 47th with a time of 19:57. Julia Costello (19:59) followed in 50th place, while Leah Durr (20:00) took 53rd. Karla Negron came across the finish line in 20:02 to take 55th place.
“I was really pleased with how our top three finished,” said head coach John Gartland. “Laura finished eighth a year ago and moved into fourth place this year. Dani has made huge strides, and Heather ran much better than she did earlier this year. Our gap between our third and fourth runners is something we need to work on, but I was pleased that our fourth through seventh runners finished close together.”
Indiana State returns to action on September 30 when the Sycamores travel to South Bend, Ind., to take part in the Notre Dame Invitational.
