TERRE HAUTE, Ind.The Indiana State men’s cross country team won its second consecutive Indiana Intercollegiate meet in impressive fashion by recording 32 points to sqeek out a victory over Purdue, who finished second. The Sycamore women were second at the LaVerne Gibson Championship Course, with a team score of 138.

The men scored 32 points in the meet to edge Purdue by just eight counters, as the Boilers scored 40. ISU’s top finisher was Sean Bowman, who finished second in the race after winning the championship one year ago. Bowman posted a time of 25:36 to finish just behind Evansville’s Nick Waninger’s time of 25:28. Waninger took the Indiana Intercollegiate Championship after finishing as a All-Missouri Valley Conference selection one year ago.

ISU put four runners in the top seven as Bowman was trailed by Justin Kunz, with a time of 25:37, which was good enough for third place. Scott Keeney’s time of 25:50 finished sixth, while Kyle Walsh was right with him with the same time, but video tape showed Walsh was seventh.

Indiana State’s Jared Messmann’s time of 26:15 was 14th, while Randy Placenia was 23rd with a time of 26:37.

"It was a fairly close meet between Purdue and us out there today," men's head coach John McNichols said. "Purdue went out and controlled the race early and created some doubt amongst our team as to whether we could get back into it and break them up. Our guys really ran than guts out and moved back in just close enough to get the win. I have to compliment Purdue for making this a great race."

On the women’s side, Indiana State finished fourth with a team score of 138. The winner of the women’s 5K race was Indiana, who tallied 38 points in the victory.

The Sycamores were paced by Laura Engle who ran an 18:32 to finish 10th overall. ISU also had Dani Prince finish 21st with a time of 18:50, while Kayla Alexander was 26th in a time of 19:09. The 30th place finisher was Julia Costello who ran a time of 19:16, while Karla Negron was 51st in a time of 19:47.

Leah Durr’s time of 19:49 was good enough for 52nd, while Sarah Engle finished 112th in a time of 21:26.

The top individual in the race was Jessica Gail of Indiana who led the pack in a time of 17:37.

"I thought we had a chance to be second today, but we didn't run as well as I thought we would," women's head coach John Gartland said. "The problem today was that we ran very aggressively the first mile of the race, but the heat started to take its toll. We did get gutsy performances by all of our top six, and were able to still finish fourth. I am disappointed that we just missed beating Purdue."

In the men’s open 8k race, Marc Farris of Stephen F. Austin paced the field with a mark of 25:44.7. Jordan Fife, an unattached runner, who recently competed for Indiana State, finished in fourth place with a time of 26:01.2. Other finishers with ISU were Jeremy Kunz in 12th at 27:37.6; David Santelik in 15th at 28:06.0; John Lambertus in 21st at 28:40.6; Steven Porterfield in 28th at 28:57.9; Justin Pyle in 30th at 29:06.5; Kurt Heimann in 36th at 29:25.6; Joseph Kochiss in 43rd at 29:50.6; James Twitchell in 47th at 30:01.1; Thomas Crum in 49th at 30:02.6; Brad Ada in 59th at 30:30.8 and Marcus Phelps in 97th at 32:38.6. A total of 127 runners competed in the men’s 8Kopen race.

The Indiana State men's and women's cross country teams return to action on September 29 to race in the Notre Dame Invitational. The Sycamores will return home on October 14 to host the Brooks Pre-Nationals Race at the Laverne Gibson Course.
