ENGLE TAKES FIRST
IN WOMEN’S COMPETITION AT NOTRE DAME INVITE
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Indiana
State’s women’s cross country team tied for fourth place
in the Gold Race of the Notre Dame Invitational today (Sept. 30)
behind a strong performance from Laura Engle who finished first
overall. She set a personal best in the 5k, crossing the tape in
17:40, which shaved four seconds off her previous best set last
year at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational.
“I was pleased with the team’s overall
performance,” said Engle. “This was a great course that
was flat which allowed me to run a fast time. One of the goals I
set for myself was to finish first at a race this season, so I’m
glad to have accomplished that today.”
Dani Prince finished 18th with a time of 18:26,
which was also a personal best. Heather Stembridge completed the
course in 18:43 to earn 26th place. Sarah Jarvis was ISU’s
fourth-place finisher, posting a time of 19:12 to earn 66th place.
Leah Durr came across the finish line in 19:21, which was good for
79th place.
Ashley Taflinger (19:32) followed 14 seconds behind
Durr, and placed 91st. Julia Costello (19:46), Margaret Reyling
(20:03), and Karla Negron (20:07), finished 106th, 122nd, and 124th,
respectively.
The Michigan “B” team took the top
spot in the Gold Race with 60 points, followed by Edinboro’s
173. Cincinnati (181) took third place while ISU and Santa Clara
tied for fourth place with 189. Wyoming (197) finished sixth, ten
points ahead of Ohio University (297). Notre Dame’s “B”
team (208), Belmont (220), and IPFW (284) rounded out the top ten.
“Our first three runners were very strong,”
noted head coach John Gartland. “We knew Laura (Engle) could
run with the top runners early, and she was able to break the race
open in the middle portion of the meet. Dani (Prince) ran very well
despite battling injuries. Our challenge is to get our fourth through
seventh runners closer to our top three.”
The Sycamores return to action on Saturday, October
15 when they host the 2005 NCAA Pre-Nationals at the LaVern Gibson
Championship Course.
