ENGLE PACES SYCAMORES
AT PRE-NATIONALS
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State's
Laura Engle ran the second fastest 6K time in school history and
led the women's cross country team to a 31st place finish with 749
points against a tough field in the blue race of the Pre-Nationals
meet. ISU hosted the event at the LaVern Gibson Championship course
on Saturday. The blue race included 12 of the top 30 teams in the
country and three more that were receiving votes in the poll.
Engle posted a time of 21:32 to place 59th and it
was just the second time a woman at ISU has broken the 22 minute
mark in the 6K race since 1983. Engle entered the race with the
second fastest 6K time with her previous best of 22:09 at last year's
Pre-Nationals event. Jessica Crowder holds the school-record with
a time of 20:52 in the 2003 NCAA Championships.
Heather Stembridge was the second finisher for the
Sycamores witha time of 22:20, while Dani Prince was just behind
at 22:33. Julie Costello and Leah Durr finished the scoring for
ISU with times of 23:19 and 23:57.
No. 3 Stanford won the event with 86 points, followed
by No. 8 Notre Dame (147) and No. 13 Columbia (207). BYU and North
Carolina State tied for fourth place with 209 points.
