STANFORD GOES BACK TO BACK AT CROSS COUNTRY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The
Stanford women’s cross country team has won the 2006 NCAA Cross
Country National Championship at the LaVerne Gibson Championship
Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. For the third consecutive
season, and the fourth time in the last five years, Indiana State
University hosted the event.
Stanford’s top runner en route to
their second consecutive championship was Arianna Lambie, who
finished third with a time of 20:44. The Cardinal finished with a
team score of 195 to win the event.
Following Stanford in the race
was Colorado, who entered the race ranked sixth in the nation, and
tallied 223 points to claim second. Michigan was third with a score
of 233, while Wisconsin was 262 and Arkansas fifth at 286.
Individually, the race was
dominated by Texas Tech’s Sally Kipyego, who finished in a time of
20:11.1, winning by 26 seconds over second place finisher, Jenny
Barringer of Colorado. At the race’s halfway point, Kipyego held a
24 second advantage en route to victory.
Barringer finished with a time of
20:37.9, while Yale’s Lindsay Donaldson was third at 20:42.7.
Rounding out the top five were, Stanford’s Lambie in fourth at
20:43.8, while N.C. State’s Julia Luca was fifth with a time of
20:47.1.
The 2006 event will be known for
its warmer than normal temperatures as the mercury soared near 50
degrees at race time. But times proved to be slower because over
five inches of rain fell on the course in the week leading up to the
event.
