MATT MARDIS RESIGNS
AS ASSISTANT BASKETBALL COACH
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head men’s
basketball coach Royce Waltman announced today (June 9) that assistant
coach Matt Mardis has resigned to pursue professional opportunities
outside intercollegiate athletics. Mardis joined the Sycamore staff
prior to the 2003-04 season and spent the past three years with
Indiana State. He will complete his duties at ISU on July 1.
“I am proud to have been associated with such an outstanding
collection of people as those in the Indiana State men’s basketball
program, athletic department, and university community,” said
Mardis. “I have appreciated the support that the people of
Terre Haute have shown me upon my return and I thank them for that.
I am confident that the team will be successful in the 2006-07 season,
and I encourage the community to continue its support of Sycamore
basketball.”
Mardis assisted with the basketball program’s administrative
duties, scouting, strategy, and game preparation. He took over as
recruiting coordinator after his first season with the Trees and
assisted with player development.
“Matt has done an outstanding job in a short amount of time,”
said Waltman. “He has had a tremendous impact on our program,
and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
A Terre Haute native, Mardis spent one season with NAIA Virginia
Intermont during 2002-03. While there, he worked as the top assistant
coach for the Cobras, who qualified for the NAIA Division II National
Tournament.
Before joining Virginia Intermont, Mardis spent two seasons at
Kansas State University as a graduate assistant from 2000-02. During
the 2001-02 season, the Wildcats equaled their conference win total
from the two previous years combined on their way to a seventh-place
finish in league play, the school’s best mark in the Big 12
era.
A national search for his replacement will begin immediately.
