SYCAMORES HOLD ON FOR 55-52 VICTORY OVER CREIGHTON
BOX SCORE (HTML)
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –
The Indiana State University Sycamores came alive in the second half
and held on down the stretch to defeat the Creighton Bluejays 55-52
in a Missouri Valley Conference game Thursday night in the Hulman
Center. The victory was the fourth straight for ISU and the 130th
win for head coach Royce Waltman at Indiana State and his 219th
overall.
“You can’t think too much
about the wins,” Sycamore head coach Royce Waltman said. “It is a
great feeling to win and to string this many wins together is great
but we have another game coming up and we have to get ready for it.”
The Sycamores trailed 22-23
at the intermission but took the lead early in the second on a Jay
Tunnell lay-up. The lead went back and forth for the next five
minutes before Mick Yelovich knocked down a three pointer to tie the
game at 33. Another Sycamore three-pointer, this one by Harry
Marshall, put ISU on top for good.
The Sycamore lead was always
in doubt even when ISU led by seven with 11:30 left. Creighton came
back and tied the game for the final time at 42. A pair of Adam
Arnold free throws, and layoffs off steals by Marshall and Gabriel
Moore put ISU back up by six. Creighton got within two three times
down the stretch but the Sycamores were able to hold on for the
victory.
“I’ve always had confidence
in my shot,” Marshall said. “I struggled early in the season but
never doubted that I could shoot the ball.”
Marico Stinson led ISU with
12 points. He was the only Sycamore in double figures. Marshall had
a career high seven points while Tunnell and Cole Holmstrom had nine
each.
Indiana State improved to 9-4
overall and 2-1 in the conference with the victory. The Sycamores
will be at Illinois State Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 8:05
p.m. Indiana State returns to Hulman Center next Wednesday when they
host Wichita State (7:05 p.m. tip-off). Creighton fell to 8-5
overall and 2-1 in the MVC.
