SYCAMORES END STREAK WITH CONVINCING VICTORY OVER UNI
BOX SCORE (HTML)
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -
The Indiana State Sycamores stopped a seven game losing streak in
the Hulman Center Monday night, defeating the Northern Iowa Panthers
59-46. It was the first win for Indiana State since they defeated
Wichita State 68-63 on Jan. 10, also played in Hulman Center.
“The guys did a good job
of coming back after that humiliating loss on Saturday,” ISU Coach
Royce Waltman said. “We started off missing our first eight shots,
just like we did on Saturday but then Gabe (Moore) hit a couple of
three pointers and that seemed to lift the team.”
The Sycamores started out
slow in the first half, missing their first eight shots of the game
as Northern Iowa took an early 10-0 lead. Gabe Moore hit two three
pointers and Cole Holmstrom drove into the lane to score on a short
jumper as ISU trailed 10-8 with 10:54 left in the opening half. The
game was tied at 14 after two free throws by Harry Marshall and ISU
had their first lead when Moore hit a three pointer.
Northern Iowa answered
with a Brooke McKowen three pointer to tie the game for the final
time at 17.. Marico Stinson and Trent Wurtz each scored inside as
ISU regained the lead with five minutes left and the Sycamores never
looked back. Indiana State maintained their lead and took a 27-21
advantage into the intermission.
The game remained close
through the first 10 minutes of the second half. Indiana State led
44-41 with 9:12 left when the Sycamores defense stepped up, holding
the Panthers scoreless for the next five and a half minutes. The
Sycamores limited Northern Iowa to just five points in the last nine
minutes of the game in pulling away for the win.
“We defended pretty well
all night,” Waltman said. “Our energy level was way up.”
Gabe Moore hit six
three-pointers enroute to a game high 21 points for Indiana State.
Harry Marshall had 10 points and Marico Stinson nine. ISU
outrebounded Northern Iowa 35-19 with Adam Arnold coming off the
bench to lead the way with nine.
Indiana State improves to
12-11 overall and 5-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference with the
victory. The Sycamores will be back on the road as they visit
Wichita State on Thursday and then play at Evansville on Sunday.
Northern Iowa falls to 16-8 overall and 7-6 in the Missouri Valley
Conference.
