SECOND HALF SURGE NOT ENOUGH FOR SYCAMORES AT INDIANA

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –
A 15-1 second half run brought Indiana State from 20 down, but it
wasn’t enough as the Indiana Hoosiers topped the Sycamores 73-66 at
Assembly Hall. ISU fell to 1-1 on the season, while the Hoosiers
improved to 2-1.
The
Sycamores trailed 55-38 with 10:23 left to play, when Russell
Trudeau (Lafayette Central Catholic/Lafayette, IN) came
off the bench to provide a spark for ISU. The senior had a lay-up
and was fouled, and then nailed a three pointer to cut the lead to
55-43 with 9:11 left. A lay-up by Jay Tunnell (West/Topeka, KS)
cut the lead to eight. After Indiana hit one of two free throws,
freshman Cole Holmstrom (South/Bloomington,IN) nailed a three
to cut the lead to six. Back-to-back jumpers by Tunnell cut the
lead to two. Adam Arnold’s (Belmont/Decatur,IN) put
back cut the lead to one with 5:10 left to play.
But the
Hoosiers got a D.J.White rebound bucket to get the lead back to five
with 2:35 left. ISU then got back-to-back buckets by Gabriel
Moore (Mills/Little Rock, Ark) which cut IU’s lead to two with
:49 seconds left. Lance Stemler then nailed a three with 33 seconds
left to push the lead to five and the Sycamores would not come back.
Indiana
State trailed 36-23 at the break, shooting just 25 percent in the
half and 3-of-11 from 3-point range. The Sycamores shot 56 percent
in the second half, and 40.6 for the game. ISU was out rebounded
36-35, but had 16 offensive rebounds. IU shot 47.9 percent for the
game and 43.8 percent (7-16) from three point range.
Tunnell
led the Sycamores with 16 points, 14 in the second half while Arnold
added 11 and Trudeau finished with eight.
The
Sycamores are now 1-1 on the season and visit IPFW Sunday afternoon,
November 19. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. (ET).
