FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SYCAMORES TO TAKE
FOREIGN TRIP TO CANADA
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State Sycamores
men’s basketball team will get a jump on the 2006-07 season
when they travel to Canada for three exhibition games in September.
The Sycamores will visit the University of Windsor, Lambton College,
and the University of Guelph in Ontario. The trip will be the Sycamores’
first preseason foreign trip under head coach Royce Waltman. NCAA
rules permit schools to take a trip every four years.
“This trip gives us ten extra practice days
prior to leaving for the trip, which will benefit our team,”
said Waltman. “It is very valuable to be able to work with
our players individually, but there is no substitute for game action.
I’m excited to see how our team will respond in these exhibition
games.”
The Sycamores will open practices ten days before
the first scheduled game on September 2nd. Waltman, who begins his
tenth season as head coach of the Sycamores, will return nine lettermen
and three starters from last year’s squad. ISU’s returning
starters, Gabe Moore, Trent Wurtz, and Jay Tunnell, each played
in all 29 games a season ago.
Tunnell became the fourth Sycamore to be named
to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman team in 2004-05.
He made 28 starts and averaged 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest.
Wurtz was a MVC All-Academic First Team selection last year. He
tallied 7.7 points per contest and finished eleventh in the league
in rebounding (5.9). Moore started every game as a sophomore and
averaged 10.3 points per game. He ranked seventh in the MVC in assists
per game (3.69), steals (1.72), and free throw percentage (.821).
Indiana State will release the full 2006-07 schedule
later this month.
