INDIANA STATE TALLIES 1-3 RECORD AT 49ER CLASSIC

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. The Sycamores earned an 8-0 win over Morehead State, but suffered three tough losses at the Holiday Inn 49er Classic Title in Charlotte, North Carolina this weekend.

ISU began the tournament with a heartbreaking 4-2 loss to Liberty in eight innings. The Flames took an early lead with an RBI single in the top of the first, but Indiana State tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Meredith Simpson reached first on an infield single just down the third base line. After advancing to second on a bunt by Katie Armour, Simpson scored an unearned run as Jessica McGiveny grounded to shortstop but Jessica Moore’s throw was errant, allowing Simpson to cross the plate and even the game. Sophomore Darcy Wood carried the Sycamores through seven innings of action on the mound as neither team was able to break the tie in regulation.

However, Liberty broke through in the eighth as they put together three hits to push across three runs and take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth. However, Indiana State made things interesting in the bottom of the eighth inning as a base hit by Jackie Chomicki gave the Sycamores runners at the corners with just one out. After getting Simpson to pop a bunt attempt up, starting pitcher Terra Lowe struck Armour on the arm to load the bases, while McGiveny drew a walk to force Yvette Tovar in from third.

Kelsey Anderson, who had struck out in her first three at bats of the game, made solid contact with one as she lined one down the left field line, but Beth Hensley made a diving catch to end game in heartbreaking fashion.

Wood took the loss despite striking out a career-high 16 batters while not walking a batter, while Chomicki was the only Sycamore with two hits as ISU finished with four hits in the game.

The Sycamores struck back with an 8-0 victory over Morehead State in the second game of the day on Saturday. ISU pounded out 12 hits and used a five-run third inning to pull away and cruised to the victory. Julie Damico (1-0) threw a four-hit shutout to earn her first win of the season. Armour, Anderson, Christina Meyers, and Allie May all posted two hits, while May also posted three RBI.

On Sunday, the Sycamores began the day with a tough 1-0 loss to Charlotte, the host institution. Wood was outstanding once again giving up just two hits over the first 6.2 innings of the game and striking out 10. However, Charlotte’s Cee Brown had a two-out solo home run in the seventh to give the 49ers all the offense they would need. The Sycamores pounded out five hits but could not generate any offense against Christy Murray.

Indiana State dropped a 5-2 decision to Stony Brook to finish the weekend. Jessica McGivney had two of the Sycamores six hits, while Armour produced both of the ISU runs. Natalie Kopp (1-2) took the loss on the mound giving up five runs on eight hits in six innings of action.

The Sycamores are 7-7 on the season and will play three games during the week with a doubleheader against Marshall on Tuesday (March 14) and a single game at Louisville on Wednesday. ISU will then open up MVC action this weekend as they travel to Missouri State for the three-game series.
