SYCAMORES FALL IN DOUBLHEADER SWEEP AT MISSOURI STATE

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Indiana State dropped both ends of its first Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader of the weekend, by falling 4-1 & 8-1 at Missouri State. ISU falls to 8-11, 0-2 MVC on the season, while the Bears are 16-9, 2-0 MVC.

Sophomore Darcy Wood took the loss for the Sycamores in the day’s first game. The Bears picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning when they took advantage of an error by Sycamore catcher Yvette Tovar. MSU then plated three more in the bottom of fourth to take a 4-0 advantage.

The Sycamore plated their lone run of the game in the sixth, when Jackie Chomicki singled with one out before Allie May doubled to put runners at second and third. With two outs, Katie Armour singled to drive in Chomicki to make it 4-1.  Jessica McGivney flied out with two down to end the threat.

Wood (5-6) went six innings in defeat, allowing just six hits and striking out nine. Only one of the Bears’ four runs was earned. MSU’s Shannon Buslepp improved to 6-2, going seven innings, allowing seven hits and just one run.

MSU ran away in the late innings with a close game in taking an 8-1 victory over the Sycamores in the nightcap. ISU scored first in the third inning when, Chomicki doubled with one out, then advanced to third on a single by Meredith Simpson. Armour proved clutch in the second game as her single then scored Chomicki for a 1-0 advantage.

The Bears came out and tied the contest in the bottom of the third frame, then added four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth for the doubleheader sweep.

Julie Damico fell to 1-1 on the season as she went four innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, four of which were earned. Natalie Kopp allowed three runs in an inning of work and Armour allowed nothing in the sixth.

ISU will look to avoid a MVC opening weekend sweep to Missouri State when they finish off the three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (EST).
