INDIANA STATE DOWNS SHOCKERS TO TAKE
WEEKEND SERIES
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –
Indiana
State
used the long ball as well as a couple of unearned runs to record a
4-0 victory over Wichita
State at Price Field on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the
Sycamores take down the Shockers in the weekend series by a count of
2-1. ISU improved to 10-13, 2-4 MVC, while Wichita fell to 20-12,
2-3 MVC.
The Sycamores jumped on The
Valley’s preseason favorite Shockers by a 1-0 score in the bottom
of the second inning, when junior Yvette Tovar drilled her first
homerun of the season deep of the leftfield fence.
ISU added a pair of unearned
runs in the bottom of the fourth off WSU starter Margo Pruis. With
two outs, Christina Meyers walked, then Julie Damico was hit by a
pitch to put runners at first and second. After Jackie Chomicki
walked, Meredith Simpson reached on a error by Shocker shortstop
Britnee Barnett to score Meyers. Katie Armour drew a walk to drive
in Damico for the 3-0 cushion.
The lead was padded in the
bottom of the sixth when Jessica McGivney tripled down the
rightfield line to score Allie May, who pinch ran for Armour.
Armour doubled to rightfield to reach base with two outs.
Sophomore Darcy Wood was stellar
in the circle. She improved to 7-7 on the season as she tossed a
complete game shutout for the victory. She allowed just four hits
in the win, while striking out six Shockers along the way.
Tovar was 2-for-3 in the game,
with a run scored an RBI. Armour finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, and
McGivney was 1-for-3 while driving in a run.
The victory over Wichita
State
gives the Sycamores their first MVC series win since taking 2-of-3
from Bradley on the road last season.
ISU is next in action on
Wednesday, March 29 when they host Illinois
State
for a doubleheader beginning at
2:00 p.m.
at Price Field.
