SYCAMORES AND BLUEJAYS TRADE SHUTOUTS IN MVC DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. Indiana State sophomore Darcy Wood broke the Indiana State career strikeout record on a day in which she did not allow a single run in a combined 12.1 innings of work as the Sycamores and Creighton split their Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader at the CU Sports Complex. CU climbed back to 16-16 overall and 6-7 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while the Sycamores stand at 15-17 overall, 5-8 in Valley play after the split.

Wood was the story in game one, as she continually kept CU hitters off balance in a 4-0 ISU victory.  The sophomore right-hander struck out 13 Bluejay hitters in the shutout.  With those 13 Ks, she became the Sycamore career leader in just her second season at ISU.  She surrendered only five singles and walked one to move her record to 12-8 on the season.

The ISU offense gave Wood all the support she would need with a three-run second inning.  Kelsey Anderson singled to right with one out to get the rally going.  After a sacrifice moved
Anderson to second, she came around to score on an RBI single by Yvette Tovar.  Two more singles loaded the bases for the Sycamores and leadoff hitter Jackie Chomicki.  The lefty knocked a ball to third base, which CU third baseman Jamie Reiss could not handle.  The error allowed two more runs to cross the plate.  ISU would add another unearned run in the fourth inning to extend its lead to four runs.

Stephanie Cortese took the loss for the Jays, dropping to 7-6.  The senior allowed eight hits - all singles - to ISU, and did not walk any Sycamores.  The left-hander went the distance and only one of the four runs she allowed was earned.  With four strikeouts on Saturday, Cortese now has 112 this season, just four shy of cracking the CU single-season top 10.

In game two, Bailey Dawson led off the first inning with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Reiss.  After Lauren Cisneros popped up to second base, German stepped to the plate.  The left-handed hitting first baseman drove a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence off of ISU starter Jessica McGivney to put the Bluejays up 2-0.  The round-tripped was German’s first of the season.  The next two Bluejay hitters reached base, before McGivney was lifted for game-one winner Darcy Wood, but the damage was done.

Nee was able to pitch out of jams all day, as the Sycamores stranded nine runners on base in the 2-0 loss.  The rookie right-hander picked up her second career shutout and lowered her MVC ERA to 0.85 with the blanking.  She allowed six hits and walked three, but struck out four to improve to 7-8.

McGivney recorded only two outs and took the loss to drop to 0-1, allowing three hits and two runs in her short stint.  Wood came in to complete the game, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out five.

The win for ISU was its first ever in Omaha over the Bluejays, as the Sycamores are now 1-13 against CU in Omaha after the doubleheader.  The loss for CU snapped an 18-game winning streak over ISU.  The victory was also the first for ISU head coach Brenda Coldren over her brother, Creighton head coach Brent Vigness.  Vigness is now 10-1 against his sister.

The teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (EDT) at the CU Sports Complex.
