SYCAMORES SWEEP IUPUI TO KEEP WINNING WAYS GOING

INDIANAPOLIS Indiana State defeated IUPUI twice in non-conference action this afternoon (April 12). The Sycamores won game one by a  6-0 count, then took the nightcap by a score of 7-5. ISU improves to 18-17 on the season, while the Jaguars dropped to 10-25.

ISU blasted itself into the lead in game one by a score of 3-0 in the top of the first inning when junior Jessica McGivney belted a three-run homer to leftfield for the quick lead. ISU plated two more in the fifth, then one final run in the sixth inning for the 6-0 victory.

At the plate, McGivney was 1-for-4 with 3 RBI while junior Yvette Tovar was 3-of-4 with one RBI in the victory. Sophomore pitcher Darcy Wood improved to 14-8 on the season with her five-hit shutout win. The reigning MVC Pitcher of the Week struckout eight Jags in the win.

ISU won the day’s second game by a score of 7-5. The Jags staked themselves to a 5-1 lead through the first three innings, before ISU awoke to score five runs in the final four innings, while holding IUPUI scoreless over that same frame.

The Sycamore starter was junior Julie Damico and she allowed all five runs. Wood took her second victory of the day by tossing four scoreless innings in relief. She finished the day with a 15-8 record on the season.

Damico proved to be the deciding force in the second game at the plate as she knocked a two-run homer in the top of the seventh frame for a 7-5 lead. The game was knotted at five before her roundtripper.

Senior Alyssa Duncan was 3-of-4 in the game with an RBI as well as a run scored. Seven different Sycamores recorded multi-hit games in the victory.

The Sycamores return to action this weekend at Southern Illinois for a three-game MVC series. Because of the Easter weekend, ISU will play the Salukis twice on Friday and then once on Saturday. First pitch both days is set for 1:00 p.m. (EDT).
