TERRE HAUTE, Ind.
–
Both ends of Saturday’s Missouri
Valley Conference doubleheader between
Indiana
State and Northern Iowa
went into extra innings as sophomore pitcher Darcy Wood tossed all
17 innings in the two contests and the Sycamores earned a split.
ISU dropped the first game by a 4-3 score in nine innings, and
then won on the game’s final play in the bottom of the eighth in
the second also by a 4-3 count. ISU is now 20-23, 7-13 MVC while
UNI is 12-32-1, 2-16 MVC.
The Sycamores led 1-0 throughout
the majority of the day’s second game as Jackie Chomicki singled
and moved around the bases thanks in part to a pair of wild
pitches from UNI starter Uju Ibekwe. The Panthers rallied for
three runs of their own in the top of the sixth for a 3-1 lead
that held until the bottom of the seventh.
With one out, Julie Damico
singled to left field and was followed by a double off the bat of
freshman Meredith Simpson to score a run. Simpson was able to tie
the contest when Chomicki doubled to left field and she came
around to score on an error by the Panther leftfielder.
With the score still tied at
three in the bottom of the eighth inning, Kelsey Anderson led off
the frame with a double and moved to third base on a sacrifice
from Ashley Trover. Yvette Tovar completed the rally as she
doubled to straight away centerfield for the RBI that scored pinch
runner Margaret McQueen for the 4-3 victory.
The story of the second game was
the pitching of Wood, who completed her second extra inning game
of the day. She struckout six batters in the contest to give her
207 for the season – and break her own single-season school record
of 203, which was set last year.
In the day’s first game Northern
Iowa held a 1-0 lead in the first frame before the Sycamores’
Stephanie Spychaj singled home Chomick to tie the game at 1. UNI
went on for a 2-1 advantage in the second inning, then in the
fifth, Julie Damico connected on a sacrifice fly to leftfield to
tie the contest when McQueen came around to score.
UNI’s Rachael Rogers tripled to
open the seventh, then scored on a Wood wild pitch for the 3-2
lead before ISU was able to tie the contest at three and send the
first contest into extra innings when Alyssa Duncan’s sacrifice
fly scored Lauren Kebely.
In the ninth, UNI scored the
decisive run when Kelli Papesh belted her third homerun of the
season over the leftfield wall for the 4-3 win.
Wood tossed nine innings with
eight strikeouts in the day’s first game. Following the
doubleheader, her season record stands at 16-12.
ISU and Northern Iowa return to
action on Sunday with a single-game at Price Field, which will end
this weekend’s three-game series. First pitch is set for Noon
(EDT).
