FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SOFTBALL FALLS TO
HOOSIERS IN EXTRA-INNING PITCHERS DUEL
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –
Indiana State and Indiana battled through 10 scoreless innings,
but the Hoosiers posted an unearned run in the 11th to take a 1-0
victory over the Sycamores on Wednesday afternoon at Sycamore Field.
IU starter Mariangee Bogado threw a one-hitter while striking out
22 to outduel Sycamore pitcher Darcy Wood who allowed seven hits
and struck out nine. The Sycamores fall to 21-24 while Indiana improves
to 26-22-1 on the season.
The Sycamores had a golden opportunity to get
a run in the first inning after an error and a single by Stephanie
Shychaj put runners on first and third. However, a failed double
steal and a strikeout ended the threat.
The Hoosiers had an opportunity of their own
putting runners on second and third with one out, but ISU 3B Jessica
McGiveny gloved a line drive and stepped on the bag for an inning-ending
double-play.
ISU would get the next quality scoring chance
in the seventh inning as two consecutive walks and a wild pitch
gave the Sycamores two runners in scoring position with one out.
Again Bogado worked out of the jam getting a pop up and a strike
out.
The lone run of the game came in the top of
the 11th after a spinning ground ball got away from the first baseman
allowing Heather Hohs to reach on an error. The error would prove
costly as Jennilee Huddleston drove a shot off of the centerfield
fence for the game-winning double.
Bogado took care of the rest retiring the Sycamores
in order in the bottom of the inning, including her 22nd strikeout
to finish the game.
Bogado improves to 17-8 on the season, while
Wood falls to 17-13.
The Sycamores will travel to Evansville for
a key MVC series this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday,
April 29, at 1 pm.
