FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANA STATE RETURNS TO TOURNAMENT HUNT,
SWEEPS EVANSVILLE
EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
Indiana
State
sophomore pitcher Darcy Wood
pitched two complete games for ISU, while
recording two wins to improve to 19-13 on the season. The Sycamores
picked up 4-0 & 2-1 victories over the Purple Aces in a Missouri
Valley Conference doubleheader. ISU improved to 23-24, 10-13 MVC,
while
Evansville fell to
20-26, 5-18 MVC.
The Sycamores took
an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning of game one with
a single up the middle and a double from Yvette Tovar scored the
run.
With runners on first and second, a
Stephanie Spychaj single scored another run for ISU. Jessica
McGivney then stepped to the plate and hit a double to right
centerfield to score two more runners and make it a 4-0 Sycamore
lead.
The Aces got things started in the bottom
of the seventh inning as Cassey Kemna led off the inning with a
walk. Brittany Herald then stepped to the plate and hit a single
through the left side. Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch,
but the Aces did not capitalize as they left both runners stranded
and
Indiana State won
by a final of 4-0.
The Sycamores out hit the Aces 10-2 in
game one, with senior Alicia Laraway and sophomore Brittany Herald
recording the only two UE hits.
Jacki Bradley threw two innings before
Ashley Hobbs came in and threw the final five innings for the
Aces.
Indiana State
struck first in game two as Meredith Simpson hit a triple to score
two runs in the top of the third.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the
sixth, Liz Mooney stepped to the plate and ripped a single to
right field to score Lissa Fehlman and make it a 2-1 ball game
heading into the seventh. That would be all the Sycamores needed
as they took game two by a score of 2-1.
Danny Murphy pitched all of game two,
allowing only two hits and no earned runs.
Mooney was 1-3 in game two with the RBI
and Laraway and Herald both went 1-2.
The same two teams will face each other
for the third game of the series Sunday at
1:00 p.m. (EDT).
The two teams that Indiana State is chasing in the league
standings, Drake and Bradley, were both rained out on Saturday.
