INDIANA STATE WINS IN SEASON FINALE OVER DRAKE, 1-0

TERRE HAUTE,  Ind. Indiana State sophomore pitcher Darcy Wood topped off the best pitching season in the history of the school with a victory over Drake, to give ISU its sixth conference series victory on the year. ISU downed the Bulldogs, 1-0 in the season finale. The Sycamores concluded their season with a 25-26, 12-15 MVC record while Drake dropped to 22-28, 10-12 MVC.

Wood was simply masterful in the final game of the year. She pitched a seven-inning, complete-game beauty in the season finale as struck out seven batters, and allowed just a pair of hits. Drake did not post its first hit of the game on Wood until the top of the fourth inning.

Junior Stephanie Spychaj recorded the game’s first hit in the bottom of the first inning. It was a line shot over the leftfield wall for her first homerun of the season. Spychaj’s roundertripper proved to the lone run of the game, and was enough for the 1-0 victory.

In the top of the seventh, Drake needing a victory to insure its own status for the 2006 State Farm MVC Tournament, got a single from Shanna Cook with one out. After she was moved over on a sacrifice by Emily Hajduk, Wood forced Drake catcher Susan Slycord into a groundout to the shortstop for the final out of the game.

ISU’s victory gave them a school-record 12 conference victories on the season. Wood rewrote the school’s pitching record book with 21 victories and 264 strikeouts.

The league’s top six teams will convene for next week’s MVC Tournament in Omaha, Neb. Even through, ISU’s winning percentage may prove to finish in the league’s top six, they will be trumped by host Creighton, who is guaranteed a spot in the championships this season.
