FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SYCAMORES GO 2-1 ON DAY ONE OF THE LION SOFTBALL SCRAMBLE
Hammond, La. – The Sycamores opened their
season Saturday with a trio of games at the improvised Lion Softball
Scramble hosted by Southeastern Louisiana. This scramble was put
together after it was decided that the scheduled tournament at UT-Martin
was rained out. All four teams at the Lion Softball Scramble were
scheduled to be at the UT-Martin tournament, Ball State and Saint
Louis also made the trip.
The Sycamores first game kicked off at 10a.m. against Ball State.
Pre-season All-MVC Pitcher Darcy Wood took the mound for the Sycamores
for the start of her Junior campaign. She did not disappoint as
she pitched a complete game with an amazing 11 strikeouts while
only giving up 4 hits and 1 run. Sophomore Meredith Simpson provided
the offensive punch as she went 1 for 3 with an RBI as the Sycamores
went to the (2-1) victory. Ball State relied upon its steady catcher
Abby Gross who went 2 for 2 at the plate.
Indiana State 2 (1-0-0)
Ball State 1 (0-1-0)
In the second game the Sycamores met up with Saint Louis who was
coming off an opening round defeat at the hands of Southeastern
Louisiana. The Sycamores sent Freshman Meagan McCurdy to the mound
in her collegiate debut. McCurdy went the distance pitching a complete
game allowing only 1 run on 3 hits and striking out 5. The offensive
attack was paced by designated hitter Freshman Audrey Childress
who went 3 for 3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI’s. Saint Louis was
led by left fielder Jill Pursell who went 2 for 3 at the plate.
Indiana State 6 (2-0-0)
Saint Louis 1 (1-1-0)
In the third and final game of the day the Sycamores met the host
team Southeastern Louisiana who was coming off a pair of victories
earlier in the day against Saint Louis and Ball State. Junior Ace
Darcy Wood was sent to the mound as she saw her second action of
the day. She would also go for a complete game in this one but allowed
8 hits and a pair of runs in the losing effort. This game seemed
to be going in favor of the Sycamores as they entered the top of
the 7th with a 2-0 lead but it all slipped away due to timely hitting
by Southeastern Louisiana paired with costly mistakes by the Sycamores.
Southeastern centerfielder Brooke Lockheart launched the game tieing
2-run homerun to start the rally and second baseman Arica Rodriguez
finished it driving in the final 2 runs.
Southeastern Louisiana 4 (7-2-0)
Indiana State 2 (2-1-0)
The Sycamores will return to action Sunday morning at 10a.m. as
they meet Ball State in the first round of tournament play at North
Oaks Park in Hammond, La. Indiana State will also play a second
game against the winner of (Southeastern Louisiana/Saint Louis)
in their second and final game of the day.
