SYCAMORES WIN LION SCRAMBLE, GO 2-0 ON THE FINAL DAY

Hammond, La. – Coming off an opening day record of 2-1 the Sycamore’s were named the 2nd seed going into tournament play at the Lion Scramble hosted by Southeastern Louisiana.

The Sycamore’s were matched up against 3rd seed Ball State in the first game of the day. Indiana State sent Sophomore Katie Armour to the mound for her first pitching outing of the year. Armour went 6.0 innings giving up three runs (one earned) on eight hits before giving way to freshman Meagan McCurdy who entered the game in relief. McCurdy went 2.0 innings as the game was sent to extra innings. Ball State got a rally going in the top of the 9th, scoring two runs off McCurdy (one earned), before Sycamore Ace Darcy Wood entered in relief to end the rally. Wood gave up 1 hit and struck a batter out as she ended up earning the victory as the Sycamore’s started a rally of their own in the bottom of the 9th eventually claiming a 6-5 win. Senior Jackie Chomicki and Sophomore Meredith Simpson provided the offensive punch as Chomicki went 3 for 5 scoring a run and Simpson going 2 for 2 with two RBI’s and a run scored. Ball State relied on their star catcher Abby Gross who went 2 for 4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Winning the first match of the day sent the Sycamore’s to the Lion Scramble championship game against Southeastern Louisiana who defeated St. Louis University earlier in the day to secure their spot in the final round. The Sycamore’s looked to avenge their late inning loss the night before as they sent Junior Darcy Wood to the mound for her second appearance of the day. Wood did not disappoint as she pitched a complete game giving up 4 runs to go with her seven strikeouts moving her to a 3-1 record for the weekend. The offense was paced by Sophomore Meredith Simpson who went 2 for 3 with the Sycamore’s first homerun of the season, two RBI’s and two runs scored. Southeastern relied on third baseman Heather Sherrill who went 4 for 4 at the plate with two RBI’s and two runs scored. With the win the Sycamore’s claimed the Lion Scramble title.

The Sycamores are in action again next weekend as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to play games against N.C. State, Western Kentucky, Alabama, and Winthrop. Play begins on Friday February 23 as the Sycamore’s face N.C. State for an 11:00 a.m. game.
