INDIANA STATE FALLS AGAINST No. 22 N.C. STATE

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Sycamore’s came into Sunday’s games at the Hampton Inn Crimson Tide Classic as the #2 seed after going (3-1) in pool play. By claiming the #2 seed Indiana State was matched up against the #3 seed N.C. State Wolfpack for at 9:30 a.m. game at the UA Softball Complex to determine which team would go to the championship game to face the winner of (#1 seed Alabama/#4 seed Winthrop) for a 1:30 p.m. game.

 

Game 1

Indiana State vs. #22 N.C. State

 

In the first game of the weekend the Sycamore’s defeated the Wolfpack by a score of 2-1 as Indiana State brought two runners home in the bottom of the 9th to secure the victory over the nations #22 team. Junior Darcy Wood claimed the victory in that game by going 9.0 innings giving up only 1 unearned run on 6 hits and striking out 12.

 

Junior Darcy Wood would hear her number called again this game as she was sent to the mound to pitch against Senior Shaina Ervin of N.C. State.

 

In the bottom of the 3rd the Sycamore’s loaded the bases with two outs as Freshman Audrey Childress came to the plate. Childress promptly singled up the middle driving in two runs for the Sycamore’s as the inning ended with a score of 2-0. Junior Katie Iocoangeli came in to play first base in the top of the 4th as starter Senior Jessica McGivney was leveled in the base path by a N.C. State runner as she was positioning herself under an infield fly.

 

N.C. State got on the board in the top of the 5th as Senior Heather Gelbard doubled to left bringing around a runner from second who got on base due to a dropped fly ball in the infield. The scoring continued in the N.C. State half of the inning after a questionable call at first as the throw from shortstop seemingly beat out the run by N.C. State Senior Jen Chamberlin. In the ensuing play N.C. State tacked three more runs on the board as Senior Miranda Ervin ripped a triple to right field. This moved the score to 4-2 to close the inning. N.C. State added another run in the 6th courtesy of a double off the bat of Freshman Allison Presnell making the score 5-2.

 

In the bottom of the 7th with the score standing at 5-2 the leadoff hitter Senior Jackie Chomicki walked to get on first and two batters later Sophomore Catcher Sam Markowski launched a homerun to right field scoring two runs to close the score to 5-4.

 

Freshman Audrey Childress once again provided the timely hitting for Indiana State going 1 for 2 with 2 RBI’s while Freshman Sam Markowski provided a huge jolt with the late inning homerun going 1 for 2 on the day with 2 RBI’s of her own in the losing effort.

 

Indiana State 4 (7-2, 0-0 MVC)

N.C. State 5 (9-4, 0-0 ACC)

 

After the game the honors came in for two Indiana State players as they were named to the All-Hampton Inn Crimson Tide Classic Team. Those two players were Freshman Audrey Childress who for the weekend hit .400 going 6 for 15 at the plate with a double, triple and a homerun to her credit to go along with 3 RBI’s and a run scored. The other first team award winner was Junior Darcy Wood who went for a 1-2 record on the weekend with a 1.44 ERA and 25 strikeouts giving up on 4 earned runs.
