FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MISSISSIPPI
STATE DOWNS INDIANA STATE, 2-1
STARKVILLE, Miss. –
In
just the first three weeks of the season, Indiana
State has taken down a pair of nationally-ranked
opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference. They
came close this time before falling to a member of
the Southeastern Conference, as Mississippi State
downed the Sycamores by a 2-1 count.
Mississippi State got just enough out of its
offense, and Stephanie Comeaux and Kelsey Nurnberg
kept the Indiana State in check, as the MSU defeated
the Sycamores, 2-1. The Bulldogs improve to 14-8,
while ISU falls to 10-6.
MSU
scored first in the second inning. With two outs and
Hayle Guess on first, Blair Hewett singled, sending
Guess to third. Chelsea Bramlett then sent a
dribbler down the third base line that was heading
foul. But ISU third baseman Christina Meyers fielded
the ball in fair territory, allowing Bramlett to
reach and Guess to come home with the game’s first
run.
The
Sycamores tied the game in the third. Jessica
McGivney led off with a double to left center. Two
outs later, Meredith Simpson singled, driving in
McGivney.
State got the game-winning run in the fifth.
Bramlett led off with a bunt single, and stole
second. Nakita Boyce then singled to right field,
and kept going to second, sacrificing herself and
allowing Bramlett to cross the plate.
Stephanie Comeaux (3-1) went five innings for the
victory, striking out two. Kelsey Nurnberg finished
the game, picking up her second save of the year.
Darcy Wood allowed eight hits and a pair of runs in
six innings of work. She struck out four batters in
falling to 6-5 on the season.
Indiana State returns to action on Wednesday, March
7 when they travel to Belmont University for a
doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
