FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANA STATE
CONCLUDES SPRING BREAK ROADSWING WITH SWEEP OF
LIPSCOMB
NASHVILLE – In the first game of the
double header at Draper Diamond, the Indiana State
won a tough extra innings game to the home standing
Lady Bison’s of Lipscomb 7-5.
The Lady Bisons jumped out
to an early lead in the fourth inning on a wild
pitch by Indiana State’s Darcy Wood to go up 1-0,
but then saw the Sycamore’s answer in the top of the
fifth with three runs to take a 3-1 lead. All three
runs came off the bat of Sophomore Katie Armour, who
came to the plate with the bases loaded, blasted a
double to left field to clear the bases
The Lady Bisons didn't waste
time in regaining the lead from the Sycamores, with
RBI's from Kellie Sirus and Leigh Little to make the
score 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs in the top of
the seventh inning the Sycamore’s loaded the bases,
and scored the tying run to send the game into extra
innings with the score 4-4.
After both teams worked out
of some trouble in the eighth inning, the Sycamores
took the lead in the top of the ninth inning. With
the automatic runner put at second base in extra
innings, the Sycamores used a favorable bounce on a
swinging bunt by Sophomore Meredith Simpson to put
runners at first and third with nobody out.
The next batter up for the
Sycamores, Senior Jackie Chomicki, hit a short pop
fly down the left field line that put the Sycamores
on top 5-4. Indiana State added two more insurance
runs in the inning to lead it 7-4 heading into the
bottom of the ninth.
The Lady Bisons were only
able to manufacture one run in the bottom of the
ninth as the Sycamore’s claimed the 7-5 win in game
one of the double header.
Freshman Meagan McCurdy
(5-1) got the win for Indiana State and Christen
Campbell (5-5) received the loss for Lipscomb. With
the win, the Lady Bisons dropped to 9-10 while the
Sycamore’s improved to 12-7.
In the second game against
Lipscomb, the Sycamores held off the late inning
surge by the home team and picked up their second
win against the Lady Bisons 5-4.
The Sycamore’s jumped out to
an early 1-0 lead after the Sycamores got an RBI
single from Senior Stephanie Spychaj. The Sycamores
added to their lead in the top of the third inning
with two more runs on four hits to take a 3-0
advantage.
Lipscomb started their rally
in the bottom of the third inning, when Leigh Little
brought home Jennifer Allsup with a single to left
field. It looked like the Lady Bisons would add on
some more runs in the inning, but a diving catch by
Junior Kelsey Anderson ended the inning for
Lipscomb.
After a scoreless top of the
fourth inning, the Lady Bisons came back to tie the
game at 3-3 on an RBI single from Christen Campbell,
and a sacrifice fly ball from Jennifer Allsup. After
tying the game at three, the Lady Bisons could not
take the lead and left two runners on base.
Each team would add runs in
the 7th inning but it proved to be a
pinch hit RBI by Junior Katie Iocoangeli that would
make the difference as the Sycamore’s scored two
runs in their half of the 7th before
allowing an additional run to Lipscomb in the bottom
half of the inning. By scoring those two run s the
Sycamore’s secured the 5-4 victory in game two of
the double header.
Kim Jacobson (3-5) received
the loss for the Lady Bisons, and Meagan McCurdy
(6-1) recorded her second win of the day for the
Sycamore’s.
The Sycamore’s are in action
again Saturday, March 17-18 as they prepare to host
Evansville for the Sycamore’s first home games of
the season. The first game of the weekend will be
held on Saturday, March 17 at noon local time at
Price Field on the Indiana State University campus.
