INDIANA STATE AND EVANSVILLE SPLIT
IN VALLEY OPENING DOUBLEHEADER
TERRE
HAUTE, Ind. –
Saturday’s games marked the opening of conference play for the
Sycamore’s as they hosted the Evansville Purple aces for a pair of
afternoon games.
Game one started out
quickly for the Sycamore’s as the leadoff batter, Sophomore Meredith
Simpson, blasted a double to center on the second pitch of the game.
The game then turned to a
pitcher’s duel as Indiana State’s Junior Darcy Wood struck out the
side in the first inning and totaled 10 strikeouts for the game.
Evansville Pitcher Jackie Bradley also had an outstanding
performance as she gave up only one earned run on three hits for the
game.
Evansville would score
their first run in the 5th inning off of a double by
Cassey Kemna which brought a runner home.
The game held at 1-1
through 7 innings which pushed the game into extra innings. The 8th
inning resulted in quick outs for both teams so the game went to the
9th. In the 9th with one out Brittany Herald
came to the plate and belted a homerun to right field which gave the
Aces a 2-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the 9th
the Sycamore’s got a runner on board after an error by Evansville
but failed to score as the game ended by a score of 2-1 for the
Aces.
Meredith Simpson went 2
for 4 on the game with one run scored and Darcy Wood went all 9.0
innings in the loss striking out 10 batters and giving up 2 runs on
6 hits.
Following a brief
intermission Game 2 began as the clouds cleared and the sun came
out.
Freshman Meagan McCurdy
went to the mound for the Sycamore’s and the Ace’s sent Danny Muphy.
Indiana State got off to
another quick start in this one, scoring both of their runs in the 1st
inning. The first run came off of a Katie Armour single and the
second off a Katie Iocoangeli single as the Sycamore’s totaled 4
hits in the inning scoring the two runs. Evansville pulled their
pitcher Danny Murphy in the midst of the Sycamore rally as they
brought in Ashley Hobbs to stop the bleeding.
The Ace’s would score a
run in the top of the 6th off the bat of Laura Rather but
that wouldn’t be enough as the Sycamore’s claimed the 2-1 victory.
Meagan McCurdy had another
outstanding performance as her individual record now stands at
(7-1), she gave up one unearned run and 4 hits in 7.0 innings
pitched for the game. Junior Katie Armour went 1 for 2 at the plate
driving in the Sycamore’s first run of the game.
With the split on the day
the Sycamore’s now stand at (14-8, 1-1 MVC).
