FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE
#19/22 SALUKIS PAW THEIR WAY TO VICTORY OVER THE SYCAMORES
TERRE
HAUTE, Ind. –
Day one of the weekend series saw the Salukis snatch two victories
from the Sycamores by scores of 7-0 and 6-2. The Sycamores would
look to take one back from the Salukis on Day 2 as the clubs met
for a 12:00 noon game at Price Field on the Campus of Indiana State
University.
Despite their
best efforts the Sycamores couldn’t seem to get it going off
of the starting pitcher for Southern Illinois, Senior Cassidy Scoggins.
Scoggins would pitch a complete game shutout, 7.0 innings, allowing
only three hits while striking out seven Sycamores.
The pitcher
for the Sycamores was Junior Darcy Wood, only three days removed
from her 23 strikeout performance against Saint Louis. Wood would
take the loss on this day as she went 5.1 innings giving up two
runs on seven hits while striking out three Salukis.
The game ended
by a score of 2-0 in favor of the visiting Salukis of Southern Illinois.
The Salukis
scored runs in the 2nd and 5th innings with the backbreaker coming
off the bat of Becky Wegmann in the 5th as she hit a solo homerun
over the left field fence.
It looked as
if the Sycamores would start a rally in the bottom of the 7th as
Junior Katie Iocoangeli hit a double off the right field wall with
two outs but the Sycamores failed to bring her around as Sophomore
Lauren Kebely flied out to end the game.
Iocoangeli finished
1 for 3 with the double. Seniors Jackie Chomicki and Stephanie Spychaj
went 1 for 3 respectively, each notching a single.
With the loss
the Sycamores are now (15-13, 1-5 MVC) while the #19/22 Salukis
of Southern Illinois are now (27-6, 8-0 MVC).
The Sycamores
return to action on Wednesday, March 28 as they travel to Normal,
Illinois for a two game twinbill. The first game will start at 3:00
p.m. followed by a 5:00 p.m. game central time.
