SYCAMORES SPLIT SATURDAYS TWINBILL, NEED A WIN SUNDAY TO CLAIM THE FINAL SEED IN THE MVC TOURNAMENT

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake’s Susan Slycord’s two-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning lifted Drake past the Sycamores in the first game of the Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday, 2-1. The Sycamore claimed revenge in the nightcap, 9-1.

Following the doubleheader split on Saturday, the Sycamores must win the single game on Sunday to appear in the 2007 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Softball Tournament. The Sycamores and Bulldogs are currently neck and neck for the 8th and final spot in the tournament.

That game will begin at 1:00 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, May 6 at Buel Field in Des Moines, Iowa.

With Saturday’s split the Sycamores moved their overall record to (21-26, 6-16 MVC) while the Bulldogs kept even with them in the Missouri Valley Conference standings with a record of (16-36, 6-17 MVC).

In game one, after allowing the first inning shot to Slycord, Junior Darcy Wood (11-21) settled in and did not allow another run the rest of the way but those two runs proved to be all the Bulldogs would need to claim victory. Wood went 6.0 innings giving up two runs on six hits while striking out five.

The Sycamores scored their run in the top of the first off of a Jessica McGivney single to center field which drove in Lauren Kebely from second base.

The game would end by the 2-1 margin for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore Meredith Simpson had the hot bat this game as she went 4 for 4 at the plate; she was aided by McGivney who went 2 for 4 while driving in the Sycamores only run.

Game two would go the way of the Sycamores as Freshman Meagan McCurdy (10-3) would pick up the pitching victory going 4.0 innings giving up only one run on four hits.

The scoring got underway in the top of the second inning with the Sycamores bringing one run home as Senior Natalie Kopp drove in fellow Senior, Jessica McGivney, with a one out single.

The Bulldogs quickly answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by their senior, Jenna Wilkin.

The Sycamores added two more runs to make the score 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh.

In the top of the seventh the Sycamores rallied home six runs on eight hits to secure the 9-1 victory.

Senior Jackie Chomicki went 2 for 5 with two RBI and Meredith Simpson went 2 for 4 with one run scored as her batting average is now a team best .387 for the season. Other Sycamores that tallied an RBI were: Jessica McGivney, Natalie Kopp, Stephanie Spychaj, Katie Iocoangeli, Julie Damico, and Audrey Childress.

Help cheer on your Sycamores tomorrow as they look to secure a birth in the Missouri Valley Conference Softball Tournament!!
