FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TRACK TO FACE PURDUE
FOR COVETED GENE EDMONDS CUP
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana
State will travel to West Lafayette and face the Boilermakers of
Purdue for possession of the Gene Edmonds cup this weekend. The
annual meeting between the two track and field programs has been
won by Purdue over the last several years, but the Sycamores will
look to reverse that trend.
ISU is coming off an impressive performance down in Bloominton,
Ind. last week when the men finished first over Indiana, Ohio State
and Purdue. The men finished first in five events during the afternoon
and had runners finish in high scoring positions. The women finished
first in the triple jump and freshman Hannah Weide’s time
in the 600-meter dash was good enough for a second place finish.
The trophy for the winner between the two schools shares a namesake
with ISU alum Gene Edmonds who played basketball and lettered for
the Sycamores in 1948, ’49 and ’51. Following his time
at Indiana State, Edmonds coached high school track and field outside
Lafayette, Indiana and developed a relationship with Purdue University.
Edmonds later went on to coach for the Boilermakers and continues
to serve as an official during track and field events all over the
country, despite having left the coaching world.
Edmonds continues to be a strong supporter of both Purdue and Indiana
State track and field and the two teams fight for the Gene Edmonds
cup annually. Although this year will have other teams competing
on the track with the two teams, the heart of the rivalry will be
intact as the teams compete for a combined score that is greater
than the other.
The meet is scheduled to begin at Noon on the campus of Purdue
University.
