WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana State had
to once again relinquish the ownership of the Gene Edmonds Cup to
the Purdue Boilermakers after the combined scores of the men and
women’s track team weren’t quite enough to surpass their
in-state rival.
The men got the better of Purdue for the second week in a row with
an 81-78 win, while the women also repeated the outcome of a week
ago on the losing side 96-62. The combined scores came up short
against the Boilermakers 174-143.
Laura Engle and Santia Spight were the lone individual winners
for the Sycamore women in the mile and high jump, respectively.
Engle’s 4:57.92 time in the mile was a season-best for the
junior while Spight’s jump of 1.69m propelled the junior to
first after a three-way jump-off determined the winner.
The men ran to the win with points on the track came from ISU sprinters
while the distance runners were a few steps behind. Senior Jerry
Clopton swept both the 60-meter and 200-meter dash events with times
of 6.94 and 22.15. Teammate Damani Morris was a stride behind in
the 200-meter with a second place finishing time of 22.54. The men
would come close in every other track event with second-place finishes
in every distance but the 3000-meter run.
The field events for Indiana State would once again prove to be
a strength for the men with wins coming in every event, but the
pole vault. Drew Truab’s personal-best 17.65m in the shot
put and Jason Carruthers’ distance of 19.18m in the weight
throw were both good for first place. Freshmen Curt Sunderland continued
his dominance in the high jump with his fourth-straight first-place
finish (2.02m).
In the other jumping events Hanif Muhammed’s bound of 7.01m
in the long jump and Paladin Jordan’s distance of 15.02m took
top honors in their respective events. The Sycamores also crossed
the line first in the 4x400-meter relay for the second week in a
row with a time of 3:17.15.
Both teams will return to Bloomington next week for the Hoosier
Relays. The track on the campus of Indiana University was kind to
the men’s team last week with wins over IU, Purdue and Ohio
State. The meet is schedule for Friday and Saturday with starting
times at 3:00 p.m. and Noon.
