AMES, Iowa –
The Indiana State track and field teams concluded competition at the Iowa State Classic Saturday night with successful outings on both days of the meet. The event was one of the largest that the Sycamores will compete in all year, including hundreds of athletes from schools stretching across the nation.

On Friday, ISU was headlined by a second place finish in the 35 lb. weight throw by senior Jason Carruthers. The native of Marietta, Georgia tossed a season-high distance of 67’11.75” and finished behind University of Kansas’ Egor Aqafonov who gained eligibility last week and placed first with a distance of 73’0.75”.

ISU’s women ran the second fastest time in school history with a sixth place finish in the distance medley relay. The team of Heather Stembridge, Mary Kate Conway, Hannah Weide and Laura Engle crossed the finish line at the 11:49.24 mark, nearly eight seconds faster than the team that finished seventh.

Other highlights included a season-best time in the 200-meter dash by Jerry Clopton (21.65), a 14:49.46 time in the 3,000-meter run by Justin Kunz and Nigel Bigbee qualifying for the 60-meter hurdles semi-finals with a time of 8.12 seconds.

On Saturday, senior Yolanda Wright secured the Sycamores’ top finish of the day. Her leap of 40’10.25” was good enough for fifth place and is tops in the Missouri Valley Conference this season. Stembridge ran Indiana State’s second sub-five-minute mile, crossing the line at 4:58.80 and in 16th out of 97 athletes.

For the men, Kyle Walsh ran the fastest 3,000-meter time in the conference with an 8:18.08, 20th place finish. Paladin Jordan advanced to the finals of the men’s triple jump and finished in eighth place with a season-best distance of 49’3.75”.

The teams will have their final meet before the MVC Indoor Championships when they make their third trip to Bloomington this season to participate in the Hoosier Hills Open on Friday, February 17.
