POOR CONDITIONS SURROUND
RUNNERS AT STAN LYONS

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A second regiment of
Indiana State track and field athletes competed at the Stan Lyons
Invitational over the weekend and although the conditions were poor,
the Sycamores had some strong showings.
ISU made it a clean sweep in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with
first-place finishes by Scott Keeney and Leah Durr. Each athlete
ran a season-best time with Keeney crossing the finish line for
the men at 9:32.22 and Durr with a personal-best and winning time
of 11:19.14.
The long distance depth would continue to show in the men’s
5,000-meter run with a first place finish by Justin Kunz with a
season-best time of 15:03.64. Teammates John Nay (3rd, 15:20.05),
Jared Messman (4th, 15:24.67-season-best) and brother Jeremy Kunz
(6th, 15:32.43) were all soon to follow.
The men and women also found success in the sprinting events with
top finishing times recorded by Gary Ogburn, Andrew Geller, Janae
Bridges, Myra Bess and Amanda Jones. Ogburn finished in the top
three of two events with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash
with a time of 22.46 and a victory in the 400-meter dash with a
first-place time of 48.60, each season-bests.
Geller also ran a season-best time of 53.16 in a second-place finish
in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. Fellow hurdlers Bess and Jones
each finished fourth for the women with times of 15.26 in the 100-meter
hurdles and 1:06.51 in the 400-meter hurdles, respectively.
Bridges was the final individual top finisher on the track with
a second-place finish in the women’s 100-meter dash, crossing
the line at 12.47. As a group, the men’s 4 x 400-meter relay
team placed first with a time of 3:25.35.
In the field events, Senior Ebony White headlined with her top-four
finish in three of the throwing events. Her marks of 41 feet 9.25
inches was good for fourth in the shot put, 137 feet five inches
placed second in the discus and 153 feet two inches also finished
second in the hammer throw.
In other throwing events, Lisa Barrett and Tessa Wolf place third
and fifth in the javelin after tossing distances of 116 feet one
inch and 104 feet nine inches, respectively.
Indiana State jumpers continued to perform well as Brandon Wash
claimed first in the men’s long jump with a bound of 22 feet
1.5 inches. For the women, Samantha McClendon finished second in
the long jump with a distance of 19 feet .5 inches. Teammate Yolanda
Wright was close behind, finishing fourth with a mark of 17 feet
2.25 inches.
The men and women will compete once again as a single entity next
weekend in Bloomington when they participate in the Billy Hayes
Invitational.
