SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Indiana State track and field
athletes concluded the second day of the Alex Wilson Invitational
on Saturday and will now wait to see if the provisional times and
marks will qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend.
Senior Drew Traub was the lone competitor to record a provisional
mark on the second day of competition, despite being short of his
season’s best.
Traub threw a provisional distance of 58’6.5” in the
shot put, but will hope that his distance of 59’2.75”
from the MVC Indoor Championships will be good enough to get him
into the field of throwers in next week’s NCAA Championships.
Traub, along with fellow senior thrower Jason Carruthers, likely
hold Indiana State’s best chances of making it to the national
stage.
Kyle Walsh and Sean Wright both improved on season best times during
the competition with a 4:11.06 mile for Walsh and a 47.89 finish
in the 400-meter dash for Wright. Both times were short of NCAA
provisionally qualifying times.
Paladin Jordan and Yolanda Wright took part in the triple jump
and each placed fourth in the competition. Jordan’s distance
of 49’6.5” was short of his season-best mark of 50’4”
and short of the provisional mark of 50’10.25”. Wright’s
leap of 40’6.75” was also short of her season-best mark
(41’5.25”) which was, in turn, short of the provision
mark by three-quarters of an inch.
“Yolanda gave it a good effort today in some tough competition,”
women’s head coach John Gartland said. “Unfortunately,
she came just short of the provisional mark so know we won’t
have any of our female athletes in the NCAA’s next weekend.”
Brad Ada’s 1:55.64 time in the 800-meter run, Adam Lies’
22.62 fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash and Blaine Zimmerman’s
4:14.72 time in the mile filled out the remaining field competing
for the Sycamores.
The NCAA Indoor Championships will be hosted by the University
of Arkansas next weekend.
