RECORD BREAKING DAY
DES MOINES, Iowa – Records continue to fall
during the 2005-06 track and field campaign as the Indiana State
4 x 1,600-meter relay team broke another school record for a third
consecutive week at the Drake Relays. Individually, seniors Melissa
Ullenbruch and Drew Traub continued to shine during their given
field events.
Day two of the Drake relays was headlined by the team’s record-breaking
performance in the men’s 4 x 1,600-meter relay that finished
sixth with a time of 16:37.84. The team comprised of Kyle Walsh
(4:10), Sean Bowman (4:08), Blaine Zimmerman (4:11) and Jordan Fife
(4:07) each put in quick split times to place ahead of such schools
as Florida, Minnesota, California and Iowa.
Traub also found most of the Big 12 conference behind him in the
results of the shot put with a fourth-place distance of 58 feet
10.75 inches. Ullenbruch’s clearance at the 12 feet 5.5 inches
mark in the pole vault also tied her with a large pack in second
place.
“There was some great competition today,” track and
field coordinator John McNichols said. “We had some great
races against a very high caliber of competition. I think our athletes
are really competing well.”
ISU junior Paladin Jordan ran the fastest in his heat of the 400-meter
hurdles and finished ninth overall with a time of 53.19. In other
hurdle action, Nigel Bigbee finished 26 out of 38, crossing the
line at 14.94 in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Other results for the Sycamores included a 15th of 24 in the men’s
4 x 100-meter relay (42.15), a tenth of 28 in the men’s 4
x 400-meter relay (3:12.05) and a 13th out of 16 finish for the
women’s distance medley relay team with a time of 12:15.56.
The competition doesn’t slow down tomorrow as Saturday marks
the final day of the meet. Key events that will get underway are
the men’s hammer throw (Jason Carruthers), men’s discus
throw (Charlie Sparks), women’s high jump (Santia Spight),
men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase (Jordan Fife) and more.
