FIFE PROVES WHY HE
IS ONE OF THE BEST AT DRAKE RELAYS
DES MOINES, Iowa – Jordan Fife helped Indiana
State finish on a high note during the final day of competition
of the Drake Relays on the campus of Drake University. In addition
to notable individual finishes, the Sycamores competed in many of
the days’ relays.
The day was headlined by Fife’s 8:53.60 first-place finish
in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, when the senior broke from
the pack early in the race. The victory marked the second consecutive
year Fife had placed first in the event in the Drake Relays.
Senior Charlie Sparks followed up his record breaking performance
last week at the Illinois Invitational with a fourth-place finish
in the men’s discus. The throw of 181 feet 10 inches was the
top throw of any mid-major athlete and bested competition from the
Big 12, Pac 10 and SEC.
In other throwing action, Jason Carruthers finished seventh in
the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 199 feet 5 inches.
On the track, Sean Bowman finished fifth in the men’s 1,500-meter
run with a time of 3:50.54. Two other MVC athletes finished ahead
of the ISU sophomore in what will be a premier event at the MVC
Championships on May 11-13.
Santia Spight was the final finisher for the Sycamores in individual
events on the day with a tenth-place finish in the women’s
high jump, clearing the bar set at 5 feet 5 inches.
The relays ran on the final day included teams of Jerry Clopton,
Damani Morris, Sean Wright and Brad Ada finishing fourth out of
24 in the men’s 1600 sprint medley relay with a time of 3:26.05.
Nigel Bigbee, Clopton, Anthony Bertoli and Paladin Jordan ran a
qualifying time of 59.63 and tallied a fourth-place finish in the
men’s 4 x 110-meter shuttle hurdle relay final with a time
of 59.99.
Kyle Walsh, Wright, Jake Hack and Blaine Zimmerman teamed to finish
12th of 16 teams in the men’s distance medley with a time
of 10:11.09. And the women’s team of Laura Engle, Dani Prince,
Julia Costello and Ashley Taflinger finished in 21:06.32 and 10th
of 15 in the women’s 4 x 1,600-meter relay.
The outdoor track and field season continues next weekend in Bloomington,
Indiana when the men and women travel to IU to compete in the Billy
Hayes Invitational.
