INDIANA STATE OFF TO GREAT START AT HOME

Day One Results

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State got off to a quick start at the first day of the Pacesetter Invitational Friday afternoon. The Sycamores benefited being at home for the first time this season and did not disappoint fans on the opening day of competition.

The highlight of the meet was senior Drew Traub’s record-breaking first-place throw in the men’s shot put. Traub’s distance of 59’-8.25” broke the 59’-3” 1976 mark of Mike Serrichio by more than five inches.

“It was just an outstanding effort by Traub today,” men’s head coach John McNichols said. “I was proud of his performance and felt that it was just extraordinary.”

The men also excelled in the hammer throw with three ISU competitors placing in the top five. Carruthers threw just short of his season-best distance with a first-place throw of 199’-4” and Traub was close behind in third (181’-8”) with senior Charlie Sparks in fifth with a mark of 175’-1”.

Indiana State was the lone competitor in the shuttle hurdle relay as they prepare for the Drake relays in two weeks. McNichols noted that the finishing time of 1:01.0h was misleading with the wind being a large factor during the race.

“It is good to be at home,” McNichols said after the competition. “I think the score reflects that we have some strong throwers. I would imagine that tomorrow scores will even out a little bit and it will be a great meet to watch.”

The women were also paced by strong throwing. Senior Ebony White placed third in the shot put (42’-8”) and second in the women’s hammer throw (156’-5”) to tally a total of 16 points for the Sycamores.

“This is a good start in this meet,” women’s head coach John Gartland said. “Our goal is to beat Purdue and I think that will take a good team effort.. Our success today was largely due to Ebony [White] with her third-place finish in the shot and season-best throw in the hammer.”

The women also competed in the shuttle hurdle relay, finishing second to Purdue with a time of 1:08.3h.

The Pacesetter Invitational will resume tomorrow at Rose-Hulman with the majority of the events being held. Field events will begin at Noon and action will begin again on the track beginning at 1:00 p.m.
